Does anyone have any input on the differences between these knives? I just bought a nmsfno from the store and want to add a small utility knife to compliment it. Thanks for the ideas or info.

Personally, I like the Active Duty in the size range.

From TOP to BOTTOM - Game Warden, Cultellus, Active Duty, 3.5" Hairy Carry, 4" Hairy Carry, Meaner

+1 on the AD, fantastic knife.

SS4 - Great knife and one of my keepers with very comfortable Mudder handles
GW - Handle feels to small in my hand but that's a matter of personal taste
HC - Was not as comfortable to me because of the metal near the lanyard hole

Not a mudder-handle fan, so I didn't take to the SS4. It didn't have the "grip" that I've come to expect from Res-C. It was actually slippery in my hands.

I like the AD. Good handle.

Definitely a GW fan as well. Depends on what you are doing with it. The GW is probably more of a small hunting blade. (More belly, more controllable tip for gutting.) For utility, hte AD may be better. Esp. a BAD.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I will let you know what happens. They all look great, and I'm sure whatever I get will work out really well for me.

I ended up with an AD modified by B Tang. I'm looking forward to it as it sounds like what I wanted. I realized finding a satin AD or BAD would be pretty tough, and this option seems solid.

The AD would easily be my first choice "IF" it didn't have the choil and Talon Hole. :thumbdn:

IMO - The AD does have a good handle and a GREAT blade shape for task use, but I WISH the AD were more like this:

In all fairness though, the AD is still decent since it does have a nice handle and GREAT blade shape. But, it "COULD" be awesome! I would also prefer the thinner blade like on the BAD. But, I appreciate the thicker blade as well - just depends on use.

Since the AD is not like how I would prefer (and it bothers me), I would call it a toss up for me between the SS4 and HCLE.

The SS4 has an almost identical blade to the Meaner, but with very ergonomic and comfortable Mudder grips. And the SS4 has a "Functional" choil vs. the Meaner's worthless choil that is too small for a finger and too large for a sharpening choil = wasted space and wasted area that I personally like to have a sharpened edge for "close in" detail cutting. IMO - as with the AD, Warden and other smaller Busse knives, the Talon Hole offers nothing on the Meaner either and makes the guard larger than preferable. (Again.... just my opinion).

The HCLE could use some slight handle modifications for me. But, my ideas on the mods are a bit hard to explain. They are minor though and mainly just to fit and feel a bit better in my hand. I have both a 3.5" and 4.0" HCLE. But, I haven't made the modifications yet. Otherwise, the HCLE has a great blade shape, a very cool swedge grind, and the 154CM is very good steel for a slicer - although a bit more challenging to sharpen.

The Warden doesn't work for me. Again, I don't like the choil or Talon hole and the Warden's handle doesn't fit my hand. Without the choil or Talon hole, the handle could be a better shape AND more blade.
Also, for task use, I prefer a different blade shape than the Warden.
I am not a fan of the Warden for a number of reasons. To each their own.

I have to agree with Stlhead, the Mud Puppy LE (MPLE) is a VERY good choice that is often over-looked.

The Mud Puppy LE offers the same 154CM steel as the HCLE, a similar blade shape to the AD (stout/thick), but a hair shorter, the awesome ergos of the mudder grips and a "Functional"/worthy choil. - It is a Great little knife IMO.

Hmmmmm .... Congrats I guess.

I was typing my post when you posted what you chose. .... I sort of feel like I should delete my post now. :o

I am curious to see what modifications "B Tang" did to the AD.

Did he just strip it? or other mods?

I analyzed two different AD's I owned (and sold), but I could not figure out a way to modify to improve the choil and Talon Hole to my satisfaction. :(

I hope it works for you. In all fairness, LOTS of people LOVE the AD. And I still say it has a very nice handle and one of the BEST blades shapes for task use. But, for me, I still know I would prefer it like my concept above. :(

That is a nice looking knife. I love those snakeskin micarta handles. For my purposes a 3.5 inch blade is perfect, and I see what you mean about the guard hole. Too small to use, unless your an infant. But I'm sure the knife will out fine for me.

Well... sounds like you are already committed. And again, the AD has a LOT of good qualities.

So, give it a try and see what you think.

For the record, since nobody posted a pic, a good knife to compare to the AD would be the Mud Puppy LE (MPLE):

The MPLE and AD have a lot of similarities in blade shape and handle ergos. The main differences are steel type, choil, and handle material.

Of course, most everyone around here will concure that INFI is the KING of knife steels and has a lot of advantages over most knife steels - especially toughness.

But, for a smaller knife like the MPLE, 154CM is still quite good.

And a lot of people LOVE the mudder handles.

Anyway, when you get your AD, post back with your thoughts.

I will, thanks for your input. Those Mud Puppy handles look like good grip is mixed with good ergonomics.

I appreciate your input. I was looking at a Harry Carry, but since it was already out of my price range, I said screw it and splurged on the AD due to the steel and grip.

The changes are satin finish, different micarta grip, and an edge to provide a sharper edge on the blade. His pics were below.

rutmi,

Ban does GREAT work.

No doubt in my mind that the edge he put on that will improve cutting ability to top shelf!

And his satin finishes are excellent.

I like the mosaic pins, but from the pics, the handle looks quite thick to me for knife it's size.

However, if it is too thick, it is easier to thin down scales and reshape if needed rather than increase size. ;)

I could go on about modding for a long time. Just get it in your hand and see what you think. You might like thick scales on this knife.

Yes.

It is probably hard to determine from pics, but that choil "IS" perfectly functional. It is smaller, so not a "large - sink your finger into" choil. But, it is perfectly functional with plenty of room and allows good control. Notice the angle, it is set up where about 75% - 80% of the leading edge of your index finger dips into the choil to choke up and control. Hard to explain. But, it works fine without wasting blade.

However, for many people the "very" edge of the blade right by the choil should probably be left or made dull.

For my uses, the choil is plenty secure, but in a tight grip the skin on my index finger can push into that corner. If that corner is sharp, it could just nick your finger. Just keeping about 1/16" dull at that corner should be fine for most while still allowing functional "close in" cutting.
