Okay, I am thinking of getting a games machine for me and my son (age 5) and need to choose between a Playstation 2 or an XBox.

As far as I can see they both have great games, but the PS/2 has a socket to connect to my home theatre (do a search for the details!).

What do you guys prefer - and why?

Regards,

Ed

I have a PS2 and would suggest it. No need to purchase anthing to play DVDs, A huge selection of games and the ultimate reason to buy a PS2...........Grand Theft Auto Vice City!!!!!!!

I've got both - I like the Xbox because I'm addicted to Medal of Honor and 007: Nightfire, but they are available on PS2 as well.

And TheBadGuy is right - Vice City rules. I spent 3 days on it just doing car jumps, flips, & tricks... not even doing missions. It's pretty cool.

PS2 for Final Fantasy X, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto *.

:)

My son will be 5 in March, and I was wondering which game system to get for him as well. He already has the Playstation PS1, so I think I will go ahead and get him the PS2 since he can play his current PS1 games, plus DVD's in his own room.

One word of advice: If you get a PS2, get it at Electronics Boutique, and take advantage of their extended warranty. As much as I prefer the PS2, they screw up more than the XBox or Gamecube, I'm on my second PS2, I bought my first one somewhere else, and my warranty was expired. If you have a problem with one from EB, you just take it back, and they give you a new one right away.

Best Buy has a similar extended warranty you can buy that is good for 2 years. I had to use it when my PS2 started screwing up. I had to send it back and they gave me a voucher for what it cost. Even though I had the problem with the PS2, I still prefer it to the others. A lot more games and you can use the PS1 games. But try to get an extended warranty with it.

Sounds like I should get Vice City.

The cool thing about sending mine in after it had problems and getting the voucher, I bought the PS2 when it was $300. When I went to get a new one, the price was $200. Spent the extra 100 on games:D

It comes down to what games you want and the ones I've wanted have mostly been on the PS2. Compared to knives and guns, videogames are pretty inexpensive, so if you can spare the cash, I'd get both. That said, I haven't bought an XBOX yet (no game I HAVE to own badly enough to by the system yet).

I've just got an XBOX for the kids.
Basically, it was down to the fact they've a PS2 at their mum's house, and I thought something different would be fun.

I bought an advance SCART lead which has an optical out to the home cinema. GT2002? scared the cr?p out of me when I was overtaken, and the car sound came from behind.

The DVD engine is apparently better as it is in Hardware not PS2 as software [though you need a 17squid adaptor]

My lad says the graphics are excellent.
Both he and the girl kick my behind on every game I've tried:(

I'm very pleased with it.

some of the earlier playstations shipped with slightly buggy DVD software, but the new version are updated and just about perfect, and if you buy the dvd remote for the playstation 2 it comes with a cd that will update the software removing the bugs from the older versions.

My main complaint with my PS2 is that you cannot turn it OFF with the DVD remote, you have to walk over and push the button.

I dont own an XBOX thoguh so this might be true for it as well.

I think all controls should come with a power button somewhere on them for lazy people :)

I have both systems both have their advantages and all that.

Comes down largely to which games they want to play, although for younger kids I would go with a PS2 as they have some more established console franchises for younger gamers, while the Xbox has more PC ports (good old microsoft).

I like them both but the PS2 is definetly a more traditional console and as such has more kid's games. If you can afford it get both (it's easier :D)

My advice would be, buy a Gamecube. (btw, I do own a PS2 with all the top games as well). I have a son who is nearly 5 and I have done a lot of searching for "kid friendly" games, and Nintendo has everyone else beat hands-down. With so many great Nintendo only games out there ie. Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Monkey Ball 2, Metroid Prime (ok, that's for me!), Star Wars Rouge Leader, Animal Crossing, Starfox and the upcoming Legend of Zelda, my choice was clear; PS2 for me and a Gamcube for my son. We have a blast playing these incredible games together!
Just my humble opinion.

Got both and like both. Would recommend the warranty option, thought when my almost 2 year old PS2 stopped playing DVDs, Sony fixed it for free even though it was out of warranty.
