Here is the DoTD Khukuri Ganga Ram/Bonecutter built by Santosh. My first khukuri, so I don't have much to compare it to at the moment. My Sirupati should be here tomorrow, so that will soon change.
It really is a cool looking blade. You can tell it's hand pounded and not machined, and it gives it a pretty cool character. It feels rock solid and is strangely balanced for what Im used to. The blade was in rather rough shape out of the box. The belly and whatnot was pretty rough. I've got it pretty well fixed up, but I don't have it razor sharp yet. Once I got it usably sharp, I went out and chopped some stuff with it.
It sheared right through fresh 3/4"-1" willow saplings. Then I chopped off some sharp dead branches. I did try splitting some thin logs, but that proved to do a good job hurting my hand. The poplar here is pretty tough to split with a fullsized axe and wedge. Eek. Worked well for kindling sized stuff though. I think i already like this more for a hatchet role than I do an actual hatchet. I tried hacking through a bottle, but it's just not to that point yet.
After messing around outdoors, I came back in, sharpened on it a bit more, and took it into the kitchen. Cut up some melons and peaches. Worked a lot better than I was expecting, actually. Might be using it in the kitchen more often too.
Chomp!
