Yep, those are definitely new work, both the carving and the buttcap. Really does add to the "special" of the GRS. Wish both my older ones had those touches!

I think the chainpuri has similar handle carving, but only the kothimoda and dhankuta have somewhat similar buttcaps as far as I know.

Thanks for sharing!

I do like the buttcap on the GRSs.

Good first attempt, 45-70. Little work on the focus, and you've got it.

Man, but they're using a lot of rouge these days!

Autofocus digital camera.

While this is much faster I do miss my Minolta X-700, much better pictures. But what do you expect from a free camera right? My little Hp 320 just doesn't cut it. I think it's a matter of distance.

I really like the way the "butt cap" looks! I don't suppose the Kamis will be putting them on other khukuris, will they? :D

Very nice.

Is that solid metal or soldered sheet like the bolster?

I'm guessing the latter
and wondering if there is any horn under the buttcap?

It may be that larger diameter horn is in short supply at the shop
& this is how they make up for it.
Lemonade!

You won't like 'em in actual use!:(
Bill tried for ages to finally get the kamis to go to the flat buttcap we have now. Don't rock the boat! :p

The old buttcaps were made the same way from soldered thin metal only shorter. If you tried to file the sharp point off you went into the hollow and there was no way to make it look nice.
These can only be worse even if they are purty!!!!:grumpy:

Yvsa, understand your point about going into the hollow, but I don't see any sharp points on this one. Am I missing something?

The Pen knife is also done with a buttcap, but fortunately, it fits the grip (rounded already). I've several that I've taken the point off of...and agree with Yvsa that it's suck to have a pointy one and not be able to grind it rounder...

(but they *are* purdy in a touristy sorta way)

If I had a hammer
or a grinder
some JB Weld
I could make it rounder

And call it a pounder?

Yvsa's dead right. Don't rock the boat.

I'm sure you guys are right, BUT, on the HI web site under the history section I believe there is a pic of a very nice khuk with a solid brass buttcap that looks very similar to this one.

That would seem to give the best of both worlds, as it could always be ground down, but flowed right into the rest of the handle. Nice!

Of course, I'm on the lookout for anything different, and the difference is that much of this stuff is old hat to many of you long-time collectors, while I am just seeing it for the first time with no idea of the problems that might be associated with it.

Thanks,

Norm
