I'm in hot water with my bosses. Apparently, the company suffered a lawsuit recently - which we settled - and now the Spanish Inquisition has led a task force to crack down on everyone with excessive emails. I've been found guilty, and looks like I'll be losing my email and Internet priviledges. This really sucks, because I do the bulk of my posting from work as many of you know. I'll try to rearrange my posting schedule to early mornings at home or after work perhaps. Dang it... I'm gonna miss this! Feels like the noose is around my neck right now, and my GM has his hand on the lever.

Thats a loss.......I am surprised it hasnt happened to me too.....Do you have a cable connection at home? If my only internet was my home puter I'd get that. Saves alot of time....

Yeah I get High-Speed cable at home. Its excellent, but costly. Yet, we live out in the boonies, so its a cheap source of entertainment if you spread out the cost per hour of use.

This job is starting to suck. I may have to find greener pastures. Anyone need a machinist/welder/knifemaker/carpenter/electrician/plumber/jackass?

:D

Been visiting there, Mark. Some things look good but are a couple hours away. Maybe I should bite the bullet and go full-time?

If I could swing going fulltime, I would jump at the chance. I figure I'm still a couple of years away from it.

Heck , Roger is getting awy from heat treating. that could be a good source of income if you advertised the service. With your machinist skills I dont see why you couldn't come up with a good folder design and make some $ from that. The key is to diversify it seems. Lot's of Irons in the fire.

I wouldn't just now Jeff. I know I sound like the Grinch most of the time when this subject comes up but.......

Your thinking of moving.......you need to decide on that and get a mortgage while you still have a job. Then come up with a plan to phase yourself into full time.

Something like.....1st 6 months, = 40 hours per week at a full time job, 30 at knife making.

2end 6 months, 40 hours a week at your own machine shop, 30 at knife making.

As business changes, you adjust to do what YOU want to do.

I've found stupid things like eating and bill paying take far more time than they should.

Jeff....I hate to hear that too.

now here is a suggestion for you. I woudl look around for another place to work, and look into a business that you can run out of hte house on the side. The knifemaking might be fun, but if you do not already have a decent sized customer base established then it may be a bit tough to get moving quickly enough to pay the bills.

I always have some kind of side business going beyond the scope of my second job. It is the only way to insure against those dry times when things like layoffs happen.

I wish you luck either way.

Doc

That knifemaker village just keeps sounding bettter and better.

Beaters, grinders, those spooky metalurgists (wizards) Hafters, scrimshanders, sheathists (fake word) come one come all and form the knifemakers village. :)

Ahh to dream :)

If I win the lottery, you can bet you bottom dollar that this dream will come true. As a matter of fact there will be two such villages. On in the tropics and one in the mountains. We'll all take the SS Shoptalk back and forth.

Tough Desisions your talking about Jeff.....Move closer to me and we can both go full time(sort of)...but part time and start a damn company and see how far it would go. Ashville is 1 hr from me.:p Hell...Why couldnt we?

Hey Jeff, I'm sorry to hear about your position, I dont like to hear of anyone being screwed by the man. The only thing I want to say though is that if you are being looked at for email stuff you may want to avoid using the work computer to post any info about taking a job; or even looking at other jobs. If they are looking into computers they can and will see everything that you write and I dont want them to have anything on you. We all want to help in any way, and hear about any sucess or problems but I dont want to see anyone get burnt. I am always careful about anything I do on a computer that dosent belong to me. Good luck man. Keep us posted (from home).

Rodger leaving HT? Now that sounds ominous. It would be hard to start it up with shoes that big to fill! Still, I have non-knifemaker connections that are always looking for HT services.

I can always get machine work and get paid by the part. It's just mind-numbingly monotonous. I don't want that. I'd rather have a Heat-Treating Relish(tm) enema than get into a production job again. :D

I got a few things to investigate. I might just try a contract with my company. A friend of mine said I should get them to allow me 10 billable hours a week (minimum) at $75. That woudl benefit them and allow me an additional 30 I could pursue my own stuff.

whats the world coming to when a guy cant spend 1/2 of his work day playing
on the internet!!!

Just be cafefull...big bro is watching....read my above post.

Guess it's all relative - my local UPS driver who is a good guy and an excellent driver got the axe today - he filed a complaint a while back because of carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty exhaust system, even proved it with CO tester and well he's been in the shite list ever since....
He's going to fight it but a crappy thing to do to one of the good ones (the relief driver during the Thanksgiving holidays reported our place as no such address even after the manager drew her a map! - the lack of getting the supplies put me another week behind but oh well I'll bet she's still got a job......

That sux, Chuck. Yep, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Corporate America is all greed and its don't care one lick about you or your family. All they care about is the bottom line. At least those of us in the craft will rest in the ever-after when its our time - for sure. My company has always been super-conservative when it comes to money and employee bennies, but now some huge venture capital group is starting to pour money all over us like honey on a ****-waffle. Things are changing and I don't like it. No matter how much syrup you pour on a ****, its still a ****.

Grr... sorry for the grumpy attitude today, guys. I got a lot to be happy about. I just hate meetings, and we had a long one today, plus they got a stick up theirs butts about my emails right now. I got a long weekend ahead - its going to be good.
