Which one is better for the money? I can only order off amazon. Other suggestions are accepted but they have to bet under $30 as this is a gift for my 14 year old cousin.

Does it have to be the Ganzo? There are a bunch of inexpensive Chinese knives from Sanrenmu and Enlan that cost less than $15 and yet come with mid-end steel. Not to mention that I am opposed to giving a teenager any knife with a blade longer than 8cm.

Plus some may rain negative karma on you for the Ganzo since it uses the copyrighted axis lock.

I don't know what it's going for right now but my twelve year old brother has a Kershaw brawler and it's nice for the price. I think the rat 2 is your best bet I always hear good about it on here and other places.

Thanks for the advice. Still not sure though. I might just get the Rat II because of all the praise it gets.

Rat II

Purchased a few for gifts and they always impress

Yep, I bought the Rat 1 and had to get the Rat 2 after handling the Rat 1. Smooth, nice blade shape and handle, I say a must have for everyone. Very useful well worth the cost.

Another option is the ESEE Zancudo. It's nearly the same knife as the RAT 2, but a bit slimmer because of the framelock and has a spear-point blade.

the rat 1 is probably my favorite knife that I own, and I have a fairly large collection of mid to high end production knives. I say go with either rat 1 or 2. You can't go wrong

It is not. Looks nothing like it at all. As you have proven multiple times you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yeah, it's not like a short Google search can verify it or anything. Anyway, I'll follow the advice in your signature.

I like my enlan el-01 and AFAIK its not a clone of anything.

The anti clone thing is funny since I'm a musician, people clone everything and as far as I have seen....the musical instrument market didn't crash 30 years ago.

In fact I also urge the original poster to check out the enlan el-01 too

<jerk it emoticon removed - This is for Whine & Cheese only>

i have a rat 1 and was very desappointed
: blade is totally offcentered and the liner fails and goes completely on the right of the mecanism.

That is because it is not  This other guy doesn't know what he is talking about. But yes, the OP should check out the El-01. However, when I give a gift I want it to not be bottom barrel which the EL-01 still is. As an example, try to get any sort of warranty support from Enlan. It is unlikely. The Ontario RAT will be backed up by a very good company.

👆. I wouldn't use a enlan/sanrenmu/ ganzo as a paperweight. I will agree with hellvenger that the Axis lock on them isn't bad (cept pretty stiff), but the blade steel is garbage. They claim it's 440c or d2 which it is not. Or if it is has very lousy heat treat.

Sheebus this thread went off the rails. OP I think a 14 yo would appreciate a enlan. That's who their marketing too, kids. Probably a "safe" blade to gift a kid as doubt he will be able to get an edge on it and the factory one will be a joke. Toy.

If you want to get him a folder that'll work for him my votes Kershaw - Cold Steel. If you want to get him something that will be useful for life would get a cheaper Leatherman like the Sidekick.

My enlan came pretty sharp really.

Kershaw makes a lot of great cheaper knives too.

Well, I don't agree. the Enlan EL-01 is a fine knife, even at a higher price. It is an original design. The Blade steel is 8cr and it behaves like it. It is on the same level as Chinese produced Kershaws but is less expensive. Only thing that stinks is you will get no warranty service.

The ganzo is smaller than the Rat1, the blade is slightly different and the blade material is really hit or miss, mostly miss. Rat1's blade is if I remember correctly, measured to be around 54-56 HRC, Ganzo's blade is even softer.
Rat's jimping is better machined than the Ganzo's, also Rat's screws have blue Loctite on them and the standoffs have actuall notches and are laying in corresponding beds, so when you un-screw the screws during dissembling, they don't spin.
Ganzo is a whole diferent story: they got some clear $#!t on the screws, that supposed to be a equivalent of the Blue Loctite, but it's far from it. You'll be really lucky if you are able to un-screw one of those screws - they are locked in the threads and the standoffs are spinning. There is a way to do it but it get too complicated.

Aside from the whole counterfeit talk, I wouldn't buy Ganzo, I'd go with the Rat1. It's an outstanding knife as design and build. Ganzo only have 2 standoffs, where Rat 1 got 5 and the best part is, they will all be able to replace the stop pin if it ever wears out.
The whole Rat 1 construction is solid as a rock, the Ganzo is little bit flimsier but not a real issue if we have to be fair. The only interesting thing with the Ganzo is the lock, IMO - nothing else.

The one I got was given to me by my son, he is not really a knife person, he only knew that I like axis locks on BM and this was his search criteria. I gave him Rat 1 couple years back so when he came across a "Rat1" with AXIS lock he thought I'll like it and ordered the knife. This will answer pretty much how damaging is stealing intellectual property, a "knife person" will know the difference and will act according to his standards, but a non-"knife person" will recognize a counterfeit as a legit product and will also go for the lowest price.

My personal opinion: go for the Rat1. I have few, I customized couple and gave away few, they all perform excellent and are still up and running.
I would be curious what would be your pick and why, good luck.

Enlan and Sanrenmu have never claimed to use D2 or 440C; it's almost always exclusively 8Cr13MoV with a few 12C27 models.

Don't forget the RealSteel H6 line. The full size H6 is a little bigger than a RAT Model 1 and the H6-S1 is a little smaller than the Model 1. Either RealSteel is made better than a RAT, an Avispa or the POS Ganzo.
