I have had my first look for some time at the Glock Site. Some 10 years since I used my G21 and selling it.

The 17L has vamoosed with the 17LC. The G34 & G35 look great. 9mm always seemed to lack the punch and the glock 21 could hold 13 in the mag so 17 x 9mm was a tad over the top. The Glock 19 was great mix of compact capacity. The Glock 23 hadn't hit our market until later. The subcompact I tried in .45 ACP was unwieldly.

I see the G37 in .45 G.A.P. It seems shorter than ACP but it's point eludes me. How does it fare against the .45 ACP?

It's close enough. The NY State Police and PA State Police have adopted it ,why I don't know !! [The NYSP had a number of officers shot but that had little to do with their cartridge ]The 9mm+P and +P+ have a good record on the street. The 357sig also does. The 40 S&W was very quickly adopted by many police agencies and has a fine record [except Federal's 'reduced recoil' loads].I've owned a 40 since the cartridge came out and can't see any difference between it and the 45acp on various animals .The 40,357sig,and 45GAP are designed to be used in the 9mm frame size .The 40 is my choice but for you I would suggest you pick the one for which you can get ammo easily.
Remember that for all of them performance is fine you just have to hit the target !! Get good training and practice !!

I appreciate the smaller frame. I used to have a problem with the larger glock frames, especially with regard to the wife using it. Not good for conceal carry. I used to appreciate the .40 with less rounds than the 9mm but a considerable upgrade in head size. In African city environs large mag capacity being needed meant that you were seriously in where you shouldn't have gone (riots), where as the loss in the first shot stopping power is not good on a large charging, high, machete wielding local.

The G22 and G23 were magic in South Africa against armed allsorts of ex forces (bothsides) robbers. My colleage recalls the eyes of his carjacker, both eyes had different sized pupils. Whoops he wasn't allowed to get himself one under the new regs there. Our IT manager was, like me, requested to cease bringing in knives, so he did and brought in the G23 until they reconsidered. I was the only one in that company (40) who hadn't been attacked in 2007/2008. I am not allowed a handgun here in Bots but we have one of the lowest violence rates in the world and an extremely high rate of catching then hanging killers. I have some projects in SA next year and am going to insist on support getting a G23 and or a G35 permit.

basically the .45 gap is intended for those who want a .45 but have a difficult time with the large grip of the g21.

supposed to be balistically similar to .45acp.

you might consider ammo availability where you will be going. the gap may not be as easy to get.

I doubt it (GAP) will be available in South Africa. As a proponent of first shot counts most, I really like the idea of a smaller framed .45.

I am fond of .45 and would need to reload as well. .40 is available as is 9mm and .45 ACP. I also prefer the reliability of ball ammo. A heavier slower wide slug tends to do the trick.

I notice Glock has some nice toys by way of lights and comps. Any one familiar with these.

i dont like the glock brand light (you refer to the weapon mounted light?).

for a little more money you can get a streamlight/insight tech light that is vastly superior.

and is "comp" the compensated slides? if so, they seem to reduce recoil, but get dirty as all hell.

Today's pistols are very reliable as far as feeding JHP, especially Glock, and the JHPs are far more effective !! Stay away from gadgets !They make holstering difficult and may reduce reliability .

Forget the GAP you will simply not find ammo. Buy a 17 or 19 or any other 9para. Ammo has become extortionate and only 9para is readily available and at a reasonable price. (there is also a current shortage of primers)

If you are going to apply bear in mind NEW applications are taking anywhere from 6-18 months to process. The relicensing window ends next year and the cops will be swamped with paperwork as many have left it until the last minute..... Best get on with the application ASAP.

If I can help in any way let me know......

from what i have seen the .45GAP and the .45ACP are very very close ballistically with almost the exact same muzzle velocities with the same weight bullets FWIW, in fact IIRC one of the loads was a little hotter in the GAP, so they should perform identically i would think.

i dont recall seeing much ammo for sale for the GAP though, anywhere, just a few boxes here and there, so its scarce and expensive, not good imho, makes 357SIG seem common, and the while the frames are aboput like a 19/23 or 17/22 the slides are thicker and heavier than either so unless i couldnt grip a 21 i see no real advantage & if that was the case i would rather have a .40 to be truthfull.

i really dont see the point in it anyway for a service size pistol, maybe if it was a subcompact or a mini 1911 or something like that, but i see no real reason for a full size pistol in the GAP round myself.

Thanks, I am hoping to sit the test in Zeerust in January. It is not for relicensing but for first licence.

My wife needs to take over her Dad's .222 '58 Finbear soon and damascus barrel Voerloader. Soon after getting engaged I found that her old man is a bit rough and ready, borrowing my wife's car (Opel Monza) to go to the Karoo farm for a few days and retuning sunday evening with a Free Springbok in the boot for her to prepare. He is one person not likely to be allowed his licences to be extended.

I wasn't aware of the pending final deadline but the delay I believe is chaotic and stressed with officers looking for the easy way through, causing appeals and more work. If you go the normal route your chances are very low and my colleague had his revoked because of a miss ID'd on a bar fight a similarly named person had. Appeal didn't help only with direct intervention, proof of clean record, did he get his licence renewed as he works weekends as a body guard.

My big problem is my big, very big, killjoy. The legal storage of the weapon when I am in Botswana. You can only store it with an approved immediate relative, I can leave it in J'burg but the point will be to have it for travelling. The police, near the border, can hold it for 30 days max. Otherwise I may as well not even sit the test.

Tim you are in for a paperwork nightmare....
Your wife will have to do both rifle and shotgun courses for her new application. You will have to do the handgun course. Bear in mind this is just the beginning. Interviews follow with an inspection of the premises that the weapon will be kept at as well as a pile of other s**t!!

My advice is to find a local dealer to store the pistol when you return back to Gab. If you leave it with the cops there is a 50/50 chance of getting it back....

Relicensing is much easier and quicker (although I have been waiting for 2 years for my licenses and I was a dealer for 10 years)so your father in law should relicense asap and he should get the 2 guns.At least he should try...it will buy him time.

If you PM me I will give the details of an excellent organization in Pretoria who can assist you......

Either that or buy a "liberated" gun in one of the townships!!! :D

I would personally not go with the 45 G.A.P.. If you really want a 45, don't forget the compact model 30 or the slimmer single stack 36.
I have been carrying a 36 for about 3 years now. I have lost count of the number of rounds that I have put through it with various loads.
It has never had a failure to feed, but then again most Glocks don't..
With the single stack design, the grip is more slender than the other versions.
My wife has shot it a number of times, and to her, it reminds her of my Colt Combat Commanders......
