Hi all

My mother in law found this for me - $2. It looks like a fireman's axe to me and she bought it from a guy who was a firefighter until he got hurt and had to quit. He too said it was a fire axe. The point at the rear of the head is partially chipped off but I might be able to grind it out until it is symetrical. Please tell me anything you can about it - I am an axe newbie for sure.

A couple of questions - the head weighs four pounds as you see it. What type and length of handle would be appropriate for it and should it be the same type of handle that would go on any other single bit axe?

Thanks

Steve

36" is the usual on a fire axe. 4 pounds is light for a fire axe head. They usually run 5-7 pounds.

I wouldn't grind a new point on it. If you know a local blacksmith then you might ask him to draw out a new point for you. That wouldn't be too tough, especially if he happens to have an induction forge so it's easy to get a localized heat.

Thanks guys for the great info so far - this afternoon I wire brushed most of the rust off and as I was already pretty sure, there are no markings on the head. Nothing to indicate date of manufacture or who made it. Does anyone have any ideas about that? I know there is not much to go on. I'll be getting a 36" handle soon and get it fixed up.
