The ladies who mainly seem to run "house" and "estate" sales in this area know about many sorts of merchandise, but not much about knives. I picked up all manner of European-made "brand name" kitchen knives for no more than $2.00 (I did pay $4.00 for a forged Abercrombie & Fitch-marked 1000mm Chef's Knife also marked Sabatier 1230) plus some Japanese knives with brands I never heard of that take and hold a scary edge. My deal with my better half is that I must give one away before buying another before the house collapses from the weight of knives.
Sadly, I also encounter the remains left after the curse of the "electric sharpener" has done its evil. The good knives are among piles of dross, but the hunt is entertaining.
It's not the brand. Many classic brands are junk today. You need to recognize quality in the knife. Take a small crock stick to test hardness.
