I have always wanted an M1942 bayonet in the original 16" configuration. I recently had the opportunity to purchase two (UFH and OL) from the same individual. I've been reading, online, all about the history, manufacture, and nuances of these old bayonets. But, what I haven't seen is how best to clean/protect them while also keeping their collector value intact.

I know not to remove the finish, sand them, polish them, etc... But, what can I do to remove any active rust, protect them from future rust, and still not ruin the collector value?

I would appreciate any detailed explanations with recommendations for what products to use and what products not to use...

Should I dip them in something to remove the rust? Should I use a wire brush? Gun oil? Vinegar? Any other cleaning products?

Thank you all in advance!

I use #0000 steel wool with some food-grade mineral oil. If you aren't too aggressive, it tends to wipe away rust without taking the patina away. Be gentle.

I flatten a fired rifle cartridge case. Use it as a scraper. Dry. You want to knock the rust blooms off, if you use oil, the rust dust will stick to the surface and cause scratches. This will even work on blued guns. Sometimes a large rust spot is growing on top of the finish, through a pin hole in tge finish.

After I knock the active rust off, I blast it with compressed air, then wipe with an oily rag.

I’ve read that copper brillo pads are safe to use too, but I’ve not tried it.
