Does anyone here own an M1? I'm thinking of getting one, and would love to hear any thoughts members might have.

Thanks.

I have three, but my favorite and the best value by far is the one I bought from the CMP a few years ago. It's not hard to qualify and I got a really nice rifle for under $600.00, delivered to my door. I'm sure they're more expensive now, but you know what you're getting and I'm sure it's less expensive than what they are asking at shops or shows. Although the CMP doesn't take special requests, I added a little note with my application asking for a WWII vintage rifle and that's exactly what they sent me, the serial number of my rifle dates to 1944.

Firing an M1 can not really be described in words.... they're accurate and can be made very accurate with a little modification. But the best thing is the sound the clip makes as it is ejected from the rifle after firing the last shot.

If you get one, get it from the CMP. No other place will have it at a better price, and there's nothing like getting a rifle shipped directly to your door.

gunandgame.com or like that....click on miltary weapons...then go to the Garand link. Very nice and knowledgeable users and collectors.

I believe it was Jeff Cooper who said that every man should own one good rifle... and two Garands. Tossing my lot in with the folks who recommend the CMP. They seem to take good care of the folks who come to them.

I am on my 3rd Garand. First was a Blue Sky Korean turn-in, 2nd was a piece of crap with a receiver that wouldnt headspace, 3rd is a 1944 Springfield. The Spfld runs great and is a joy to shoot. The slowish powder in the 30-06 and the recoil system make for a recoil that is more push than snap. Even Lil Bit (4ft11, 120ish) loves to shoot it. I too would highly recommend a CMP gun, you may not get a pretty safe queen, but you will get a functioning shooter.
I sure wouldn't want to get shot or butt-stroked with one!

JDP is right, Carlos Hathcock won at Camp Perry with an off the rack, open sighted Garand.

Have loved the old warhorse for a long time. Compete in vintage military & CMP type matches locally, in the past shot at Oak Ridge & Quantico.

Love mine, CMP order was the first thing I did after getting US citizenship.

I had wanted one since I was a kid,but after I got to pick one up at the local gun shop a few years ago I changed my mind-thing has screwy feel to it and is fat in all the wrong places,I now joke it's made for "chimp hands"

I also dislike the gas system, you ether have to use GI ball or get a gas plug to regulate the gas flow, you don't and you can bend the op rod,to me this is a failure of a system and I prefer one that doesn't need a certain kind of ammo

Don't get me wrong, for it's time it was a great gun,now it has shortcomings and I'd rather drag something else with me even just to the range.

And before anyone gets the nails ready to crucify me...I've handled or shot most of the old warhorse guns Enfields,Mausers,P14's,Ariskas,M1 Carbines,M1A1's etc and the two I've found that suit me the most is the K31 Swiss and the old Mosin, the Mosin is the most archaic, crude rifle I've ever picked up~but I love it! :D

So my advice is? get it,you want it and you're ready to pay for it so go ahead,at worst you'll be able to get your money back if you have to sell it (most male American shooters worship this thing) and at best you'll have a gun you love and enjoy shooting.

I have my Russian buddy after all my years of searching,so here's to hoping you get yours of whatever origin and country it may be from

Thanks for all the responses. I am thinking of driving up to the Camp Perry CMP store to pick one up. Perhaps their "special Grade" which is CMP's version of refurbished . I have been wanting one since I was a Kid, but also the more I read up on the Granad the more I think that it is a perfect all around rifle. The ammo issue did worry me, at first but CMP sells mil-surplus, and there is a reasonable selection of commercial 30-06 that has the correct approx 2700 FPS muzzle velocity that is safe for the M1's gas system.

If I win the lotto, than I might have one referbed for me by Miltec...

MPisi: Nice grouping, and is that armor piercing in the clip?

I got the chance to handle one at the gun show last weekend. Very nice, but way out of my budget. I'm one of those Milsurp guys that buys on the cheap:D

I'd love to have one if I had more time and a place to shoot it. Its all i can do to get to the indoor range just down the road.

A particular bullet weight and velocity doesn't guarantee they used the right burn rate powder. I personally wouldn't chance it, no matter what kind of luck other people have.

I definitely plan on getting a Korean War era Garand some day...
