Gardening Multitools - what are my options?

Dad let slip his envy of a fellow gardener who had a gardening multitool "with screwdriver to fix the lawn mower".

As it's his birthday coming up, a decent multitool seems like a great idea.

A quick search has turned up the Leatherman Hybrid, which definitely seems to tick all the boxes: a flat head, and a phillips screw driver, and a saw which he also mentioned looked handy.

I think the pruning shears would also be a great feature.

All in all the Leatherman seems ideal, but I thought I'd consult greater minds than mine to see if there's any reason to avoid it, or whether there's any other offering from anyone else I should consider too.

Cheers for any help you can offer...

Hello,

I absolutely think the Hybrid is great. Pruned a bunch of stuff with it and plan on getting one for my sister. Great choice for your dad.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Unfortunately mum's put paid to the hybrid/vista idea - apparently they have pruning shears already, and he told her he wanted a plain old SAK...

I'm hoping the One-handed Trekker is "plain" enough for him, because I reckon that seems like the ideal solution (within his remit... )

How about the Farmer? It's practically bombproof and enormously popular. It's pretty much a "plain" SAK with a good wood saw and Alox handles (no plastic). Of course, the one-hand Trekker is also a good one.

Not a bad idea, Richard.

I actually have one of those knocking about somewhere completely unused. I bought an Electrician plus and then saw the Farmer and thought it looked like a better option, but (and this is a purely aesthetic reason I know) I prefer the Electrician because it doesn't have the keyring attachment! I much prefer the unbroken line of the back of the Electrician, even though the small electrician's blade, handy as it is, isn't as useful as the tin opener/screwdriver tool on the Farmer...

I did think the OH Trekker's main blade could be opened with gardening gloves on, and the serrations might be useful in the garden...

Perhaps I'm going to have to give him both!

I wish victorinox would get to designing a mini chainsaw. Haha, when i was really young and didnt know much about SAK's, i got a mini champ. Thinking these were survival knives i over thought the idea and saw the cuticle pusher, which i thought was a mini shovel. Boy did i have an imagination. I still have that knife too. Have you considered a super tinker?

the leatherman hybrid would be a great tool for gardeners, I've bought one as a birthday present for a friend of mine who loves it. however, if he would use the bypass pruners alot you may want to consider getting him a dedicated set. Felco is king of the mountain as far as pruners go, replaceable carbon steel blades and something like 5:1 multiplication of force. You can use them for leaf pruning on rose bushes, for instance, all the way up to hardwood branch pruning on any branch that will fit the throat of the pruners.

I love my pair. if your dad spends a lot of time in his garden I bet he would too.
