I just got a used Garmin gps and I know how to install maps but when I try to combine maps its giving me an error message.

I read somewhere that if you install a map on the memory card it will name it
- gmapsupp and if you install a seperate map and name it
- gmapsup2 it is suppose to be able to use that map as a secondary map.

So how does the gps use the secondary map. Do you have to change any setting in the gps or does it just use it in combination with the primary map?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a Garmin Vista HCx. I don't know if it's necessary to go through this renaming process. I have multiple maps on my GPS, and to select different ones, you just have to hit the "settings" button when you're on the map screen so that the settings menu pops up. Then find the tab (I think it's the fourth one) that allows you to select maps. There are different checkboxes that you can select. Hope that helps.

Are the maps you are trying to look at different types? An example being the garmin topo map vs the garmin city maps. If that is the case those maps will not show at the same time. To switch between these maps you will need to go to the map setup area and bring up the submenu. In that menu there will be settings that say show all, show none show basemap, show (whatever other maps you have loaded such as the topo or city) there will also be a hide map. Hope that info helps and if not here is a source that I found useful with dealing with this. http://freegeographytools.com/2007/garmin-microsd-card-tricks

You guyz are awesome. Thanks. I do have diffrent maps. A city map, topo and north eastern state park maps.

I do have an extra sd card my dad made me with the latest North america city navigator 2010.40 (all 50 states road maps. It came out january 2010. I will be posting in the trade section if anyone is interested.

I have the GPSmap 60CX. The maps are displayed in layers. You have to go to the map page and enter a sub menu to turn the layers on and off. I can use the map with driving directions to my destination and then go in and turn off that map and use the topo maps for the area. All on the same SD card.

I have a Vista HCX. I figured it out. I have the north eastern city, topo and the state parks maps all in one combined map. Its only 1.6mb but map source doesnt let me make the maps closer to the 4mb map limit. Its fustrating. I tried to install the north american map and the North eastern topo and the national parks which is 3.6 mb total and after close to 3 hours of map source building the map it gives me an error message.

I was just figuring if I build all 3 maps seperate and put them all in the same folder it would work. Thats were I thought the renaming the maps came into play I tried it but I just saw the basemap and no city streets. I figured I did something wrong.

1st map - gmapprom (Primary map)
2nd map - gmapsupp (Secondary map)
3rd map - gmappsup2 (Secondary map2)

To the best of my knowledge,Garmin units read
1 single file which contains all the maps.
You can go in the menu and hide varioius maps,
but they are all there in that one file.
That file is gmapsupp.img
That file is made by mapsource when you select the various areas
and maps you want to load to your gps.

Zoltan is right on and also gave a good site to read up on.

Eroc162,
Might I suggest doing a firmware update on your gps unit. I would also suggest checking for software updates for garmin mapquest. The files and instructions can be found on the garmin site. The other thing to look at is, are you saving the compiled maps to the internal memory or to the memory card. The error message may be from the internal memory being full. The unit will save to internal if you don't change the setting. There may be previous track logs and what not on it.

Fugawee is correct in that all the maps get compiled and saved as one file. Learned this one the long way. The best thing to do is load all the maps you need or think you need and build the set that way. What happens is when you try to load new maps the old ones that are loaded go away. The file renaming process that you are thinking of, is good for having different mapsets that you may want, however you will have to plug the card into a computer to rename the file so that it becomes the primary map.

I personally have close to about a gigabyte of maps loaded to my gps (garmin legend cx). These include city maps, topo maps, national park maps and a custom map. It did take a while for the maps to build. The plus is that with the hide/show feature the maps can easily be flipped.

Hope this info helps.
