Folks,

Every once in a while I get blown away. Last week had one of those moments. Gary contacted me and told me he had a nice wedding set he made for his only niece. "Nice, I thought. This should be quaint...." He he he!

Let's cut to the chase:

"Wow!" says I. Gary even crafted his own presentation box to store them in.

That's his damascus, too.

Gary is retired and just took up bladesmithing in the last year or so. He has been instrumental in the Sierra Forge and Bladesmithing school out in California. Tim Hancock, Mike Vagnino, Josh Smith, Rick Dunkerly, and Jim Rodebaugh have all tutored him. There is so much more to tell you about this, but you will read about it in a magazine sometime in the future.

Right now just enjoy the concept!

Coop, if you get a chance to ask him, I'm curious about the fuller in the knife.

Why does it extend to the edge of the spine, and why is it there in the first place?

It just seems like frosting will collect there, and drag icing through the slices that you are trying to cut.

Seeing the integral, or appearing so, guard on the knife, I assume that he forged these pieces out of carbon steel. Would not stainless be the best application in this case?

Best Regards,

One could not even CONSIDER divorce after cutting the cake with a set like that... amazing work, I hope they appreciate it as much as we do!

Steven,

The reason that I put the fuller on this knife was that I was trying create my impression of a Samuel Bell Bowie. Most pictures of Bell Bowies that I have seen have a similar fuller. You are absolutely right, cake and icing did collect in the fuller, but it sure was good! You are absolutely right again in suggesting that stainless would be the best application in this case. The knife blade and server blade are 440C stainless. The knife blade and thru-tang was machined and ground integral from 5/8" bar stock because I wanted the knife to look like it was forged. Thanks for looking.

That is beautiful:eek:   I'd get married all over again to get a set like that on order. Precise, gorgeous, a heirloom to be treasured for generations. I love it.:)

A pleasure to look at the work, and see what you did.

You suprise me with the thought that you put into these knives, Gary, and I salute your attention to detail and the beautiful knives that you created.

Correction

I wish to correct a possible miscommunication. Coop reported that I made the presentation case for this wedding set. In fact, Mr. Forrest Bogg of Eldon, Missouri is the maker. I met Mr. Bogg at the Blade Show in Atlanta in June 2005 and admired the cases he had for sale. I commissioned Mr. Bogg to make the case out of curly cherry to house the wedding set that was still largely a figment of my imagination. Mr. Bogg has done far more justice to this presentation case than I ever could have done. Forgive me, I should have made this correction sooner but I was basking in the warmth of all of the positive comments about this set. Thank you all.

now that is an amazing set of cutlery. Never did see anything like that in 33 years of photographing thousands of weddings. Great images as usual Coop.

Gary,

Wow, great work! I agree with Steve as far as superfluous features are concerned but since this is really meant as an exhibition set and only intended to cut a cake...once...it just adds to the elegance of the design. The hearts cutout is a really nice touch. Congrats!

WOW is right. Dude, this is the most, I mean, the art work, the,--- fantastic!!!!! Great job indeed. This is what I want to learn.

I'm speechless.......this creation is worth more than the total cost of my wedding! (Not kidding!)
