Uh uh!!!
They won't even let you take EMPTY, BRAND SPANKIN NEW, UNCAPPED MSR bottles on! (just from my experience) Last fall on our trip to Oregon I talked to someone (at United) and they said the stove could be questionable...fuel bottles, whether sealed or not are a no no. So I opted to take just the stove (aired out just in case). The flight in we had no problem. While there, I just picked up a bottle (& fuel of course) @ REI and before I left I went back to REI and gave the bottle to someone who looked like they needed one
Ok, so at the airport on the way back home, some ^$#&*%& sally boy checking our luggage put me through the wringer about the damn stove! (it is rather funny looking back now) I had to unpack my pack, open up my mess kit w/stove(again, NO fuel bottle)and being that I slopped it the night before and didn't clean anything very well, there was sauce and this horrible smell coming from my kit. So he puts it up to his face and smells it (assuming for fuel), calls over everyone else to check out my stuff, doesn't know his a** from Bozo the clown, and finally he says ok to the stove but wants to know what other dangerous things I've in my pack
So we drag my #*$% to the big x-ray machine and what appears: knives,...little knives and a couple big scary knives(never can have enough of those). The supervisor put the kid at ease and sent my stuff to get loaded and we came home.
In short, call the airline and make absolutely sure about what your taking. At the counters, act mature and don't start wigging out if they start to inquire about your stuff, (I know if I started getting pushy about the stove he probably wouldn't have let me take it), and if in doubt, put some old shorts in your kit(for scrubbing out the pot)and have a good trip
