Gatco to Sharpmaker to 4/8K to Lapping film

Just wanna verify I am going in the right order with what I'm doing and make sure I'm not jumping to high to soon.

1. Gatco(usually 320/fine grit unless the knife needs some serious work and still only use the gatco if there is no edge at all)
2. Spyderco sharpmaker, 1,2,3,4 simple enough
3. Norton 4 then 8 K
4. Lapping Film 2 micron then 0.5 micron

I know some of this is overkill and I don't do this for every single knife, many I stop on the sharpmaker, and the Norton is new. I'm working my skill up to straight razors soon. Is my process correct? Is there something else I might consider getting as a gap filler so I'm not going for 1K-4K or even from 320 to whatever the first sharpmaker stone is?

I've always been "good" at sharpening, learned on a smooth river stone and later whets and eventually carbide cutters, ceramic and whatnot, but lately I have an understanding of why I was good and how to get better results and longer lasting edges.

As always thanks for any insight and advice in making me better at what I do.

Well... You have a bit of overlap. The SM stones fine and Ultra fine will compare closely to the norton, the 2 micron film is also redundant with the 8k.

The 2 micron to 0.5 micron jump is too large for the film .75-1 micron film would be needed between.

If you have diamond stones for the SM then there is no need for the gatco.

Add the 220 and 1000 grit waterstones, use the SM for touch-ups, use the lapping films when needed and forget about the gatco.
