I’ve always found the Heart Sutra to be one of the most compelling of the Buddist writings, and the mantra at the end to be one of the most compelling parts of the sutra. I’ve left it at the summit of more than one mountain.

The mantra from the Heart Sutra

Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, bhodi svaha.

Gate – gone

Paragate – gone to the other shore

Parasamgate – everyone gone to the other shore

Bhodi – the light within, the budda nature

Svaha – Wow!, Hallelujah

Gone, gone, gone to the other shore, gone to the other shore bringing everyone along, How in the hell does he do that!?!

Tears are coming out of my eyes as I write this. I’m not sure why.

Thanks for posting that, Howard. I first saw that in the book Be Here Now , and it's stuck with me ever since.

Thanks for this, Howard. You brought back memories of when I was reading the Upanishads and Lao Tse and everything I could get my hands on.
Do this some more.

Is something wrong? Everyone alright?

I guess everyone's OK. It just sounded cryptic with the "gone to the other shore".

I need to brush up on my Bhuddist writings.

small world, huh?

At the beginning of every class in the Bujinkan we say
"Shikin haramitsu daikomyo."

that is the Japanese version of the Indian
"Shigan paramitu (bodhi svaha?)"

"To cross over to the far shore, the great beacon of light."

(My language skills do not extend to India, if I have mistyped or something, feel free to make corrections)

Howard - thanks for the reminder.

Just like I do.

I think the current Dalai Lama wrote that buddha-nature can reveal itself in just the way someone needs to experience. For example, a buddha can appear angry or fearsome, for the benefit of someone's personal growth, even though these are not elements of buddha nature.

So I was going to chide Bill for letting the cat out of the bag, but why fight it.

Interesting. Sometimes it is the seemingly unimportant details (in the dojo and elsewhere) that turn out to be the most important, and the things that seem important really are not the heart of the matter.

And a fitting beginning to maritial arts study. From the sutra: "That which is form is emptiness, that which is emptiness, form. The same is true of feelings, perceptions, impulses, consciousness."

In Sanskrit it is called the Maha Prajna Paramita Hyridaya Sutra. It has been translated into many languages. One English translation is here : http://members.ozemail.com.au/~mooncharts/heartsutra/english.html
Something that will help to make sense of one of the many Japanese translations is here: http://www.andrew-may.com/zendynamics/heart.htm I remember chanting this sutra in archaic Japanese when I stayed in a Zen monastery many years ago. It's a strange mix of phonetic approximations and translated meanings.

Yes, that was my first encounter too, before I had ever read the sutra.

Clearly the Cantina is an illusion. The enlightened residents are having a bit of fun with this cosmic rube who stumbled in off the 'net (me). It's all just a test - UBDOD, smoke sent, Pan Knife, the odd troll - and you all are taking bets on how long it will be before I get it. I think I can safely say it won't happen in this lifetime. But I think I've narrowed down the Leader to either Bruise or the Durba Hoarding Duck.

It's OK to be confused...

A Hint:

Look behind the curtain.

Nah, just pay attention to Uncle Bill. He's taking the time to teach us all some very valuable lessons about life and how to live it, even though his body machine is failing and probably isn't covered under warranty any more.

A brave man once requested me,
to answer questions that are key.
Is it to be or not to be?
And I replied 'Oh why ask me?'

Um, 45-70, about the guy behind the curtain...

Tell Toto that if he pulls the curtain back just one more time he's Sioux stew.

We are all in the Big Boat. Mahayana. Maybe more properly the "Big Ox-Cart."

I, too, love the Buddhist writings. And Buddha can take many forms according to your frame of reference.

Anyone read the "Ramayana?"

"Bima in Swarga?"
