We had our first Gathering of 2012 yesterday at Aux Sable Park just west of Minooka yesterday. Here are some photos from the day.

frontiertom drew "first blood" this time. Mr. Sogetsu walked away unscathed!

The walk back to our cars. That`s an original Locktenders house on the left, from when mules pulled the barges down the canal. The old locks are on the right.

Thanks to all for a great day, great food, and getting to spend the day with good friends..

Hi John -

Kirill and I had a great time - Kirill mentioned that several times on our drive home.

It is always nice to get together with the JK crew - and it was great that even on this cold day we had new friend join us (darkmatter35).

Here are some of my pictures of the fun day where we had a great fire, played with lots of knives, beat on the viKtim, unveiled the sKraper, ate some of Tom's special beans and wienies and saw some great scenery!

I hope Mack gets to join us someday for one of these!

Here is the gang standing outside of the fireplace/shelter - a nice place for this kind of event.

darkmatter35 showing off his custom made bolo knife - I cannot remember the maker (who is a Bladeforums regular) but maybe darkmatter will fill in the blank. This was a beautifully well made knife!

As usual, Mr. K brought a pile of goodies and he held "drawings" and gave it all away to his loyal followers - Thanks John!

I was lucky and picked up this JK-rescaled Victorinox Camper with black micarta scales.

Elmer Fudd hats were the fashion of the day for a few....

An in-hand shot of the sKraper - My wife Maggie tried it out this morning and it worked better than even I expected. Now we will have to have one made for her! Seriously! This is the ultimate frost scraper!

Kirill had some fun splitting logs of frozen ash with the DBH -

Kirill also wanted to beat on his Kabar -

And then there was food! We cooked some Rabers hot polish sausages over the fire -

Tom's beans and wienies were outstanding and good fuel for this cold day -

Tom picked up a new knife which we promptly put to use -

just on the other side of the canal there was a good bit of snow machine traffic due to the recent snow

Tom was explaining how big it was to jds1. Not sure what IT is that he was talking about.

A shot of the DBH - this has proved itself a great all-around tool.

The viKtim cleaned up and ready to go home with me for some more mis-used. ;^)

Even after the batoning and the can opening and everyone hacking, stabbing, drilling and chopping on logs and treated lumber, nothing touched the edge.

Thanks to John for organizing another great day with the JK Supporters - I had a great timewith my friends. Thanks to jds1 and frontiertom for driving such a long way to meet up, and all the others for the good times!

best regards -

Looks great guys! That a cool little shelter. Is that white house used for anything now?

I am looking forward to testing the viKtim

Looks like a lot of fun in an area that has some history. Thanks for thinking of me Andy, I sure hope to join the group sometime soon.

There a several of those shelters along the old I&M Canal Trail. I think the house is used by the forest preserve on occassion.

Looks like everyone had fun! I stayed home and cleaned my apartment. Doesn't that sound fun too?

I believe darkmatter35 said it was made by Michael Stevenson. It was good seeing everybody.

Thanks Steve!

I also wanted to thank darkmatter35 for the gift of the 1500grit convexing/sharpening pad - I used that already today to sharpen up my waiter when I was making my tiny figure four trap. The pad works very well and I appreciated the gift, but forgot to mention it in my post above.

best regards -

I had a lot of fun and everyone made me feel vary welcome. Mr. Sogetsu is correct the Bolo is from Michael Stevenson. Soon I will have my collection started of JK knives with my Trapline on order.
John Smith

Looks like you guys had a good time, The canal has some really cool stuff to offer year round. The little shelter looks like it worked out good for you guys, and with the weather we were having over the weekend it was probablly nice to have some cover from the wind. - Joel

Seems like no one minded the snow too much!

Hi Sean -

Nah - we missed you being there, but the snow was not a big deal.

With the fire in that shelter, the snow started to melt off of the roof! It was really pretty warm inside the shelter.

Hey JK and mqqn, really nice photos of the "Gathering"! They all looked great! I'll have to try and get some time to upload mine if they turned out good enough to not embarrass me! I did want to thank Darkmatter for the sharpening pad too! I'm sure that will come in very handy, thanks John S.! Again, I don't think we could have picked a better day! We have had a very good run of luck on that the past few times! Really enjoyed the time we all spent together! I always miss everyone if it has been too long in between "Gatherings"!

I concede that I drew first blood on this trip but, it wasn't even bleeding! It was just a scrape from trying to hold the stick, knife and work the baton at the same time! Everyone was doing something else when I tried to make my hotdog stick, so I didn't want to bother anyone to give me a hand! It's kind of like trying to talk, walk and chew bubble gum at the same time! Haaaaaaaaaaaa! It wasn't even as much damage as I, or anyone of the rest of you would have done to your thumb with a hammer! LOL! I did not cut myself with a knife, and didn't scrape deep enough to hit a blood vessel, and I didn't stand around all day bleeding, or need to be bandaged up by two other members at the sight to keep me from bleeding to death! LOL! No offense Steve! LOL! As a matter of fact, being an X-Navy/MC-Hosp. Corpsman, I meant to ask all of you while we were out on Saturday, are all of you up to date on your shot records, especially Tetanus/Diphtheria Shots? If you haven't had a Tetanus/Diphtheria shot in the last eight to ten years, you really need to get one, and up to date on your shot records! At least go get the Tetanus/Diphtheria! You can usually get one at your local Public Health Dept. for very cheap, and I think even some of them give it for free if you are a Senior Citizen! Just a word to the wise, it's a good idea with all the kinds of things we are always doing and exposed too, especially when we are out in the woods! You just never know what is going to happen out there! Now, I'm getting down off my soap box! LOL!

I was just trying to explain to jds1 the kind of depression I was going through for awhile after having so many close people in my life die so close together, and then trying to deal with the problems that my back has caused me, and the old woman too, over the last year! I really don't think it is ever going to be what I would consider normal again! All the problems were a lot bigger than I was holding my hands apart for that photo! For awhile there, I was not doing so well! I can gar-ran-tee you, as Justin Wilson would say! Thanks for being such a good listener jds1!

I love the new Early Style Hunter JK made for me, and the sheath with the spring clip works out a lot better for me than the belt loop! Even as much as I love all my JK's, I think he put this one together extra special for me!

I made the Beanie Weenies but mqqn opened the bean cans for me with his knife, because I forgot to bring a can opener! Can you believe that, me the one that tries to be prepared for anything that comes along! I guess we can't all remember everything! I'm doing good to remember what I had for breakfast, most days, and no I don't owe any of you any money! LOL! I also had to ask jds1 for a bottle opener to open a beer, after leaving that at home too! It didn't dawn on me, that I won a multi tool on JK's number guessing giveaway items! I didn't really pay enough attention to it, as I should have, it's a fork, spoon, bottle opener, and a carabineer all in one! And thanks for that JK! I am going to drill a whole through one of the no dent openers I gave everyone in November, and put that in my pack! That way, I won't forget them again! I got my p-51 & p-38 out, and added them to the fire packs jds1 gave us all last summer! Now, if I can only remember where I put them all, I'll be in good shape! LOL!

I just ordered my Ushanka! And no, that isn't something sexual, you bunch of perves! LOL! I've looked a couple of times at them on the Internet, after I saw Steve and Kirill's hats down at the "Gathering"! They looked very nice and warm, so I decided that I wanted to get one! As if I need anything to keep me warmer! I am a hot box, and was sweating like a pig just trying to prepare the Beanie Weenies Saturday! I figure on those times where you are just standing around in the sub-zero weather trying to stay warm and talk to each other, that might come in handy though! It is kind of looking like tomorrow up my way, is going to be one of those kinds of days! Too bad, I didn't order this thing earlier than last night! My luck, someone will mistake me for one of their Russian Enemies or the Russian Mob, and shot me! LOL! I hope it looks as good when I get it, as it does in the photo of it on the website! When I first looked at them, the ones that I would have considered buying were from $60.00 and up, not including S&H! I just typed the name in on Google last night to remind myself how you spelled the word while I was trying to put this novel together, and this one popped up from Faux Fur World, on sale for $40.00 and $8.00 UPS! It had rave reviews, so I bought it! It's a black one! I'm looking forward to it coming in! I'll let you know when it gets here what I think about it, and how good it is! I may even have the old woman take a few photos of me in it to put up on the forums!

I also wanted to thank all of you for being such great friends, and being so helpful with all of my gear, and getting me over to the hut from the parking lot! I know JK and mqqn coordinated that move, and mqqn carried it out flawlessly! I never would have made it if it weren't for you guys! I'll tell you, there is nothing worse than getting old, and watching all the things that you did effortlessly in your youth, slowly disappear from you, especially after all the joint and back surgeries that I have had over the last few years! Thanks everybody!

Thanks mqqn for all the nice photos you sent me too! Wink! Wink! LOL! And also the train photos you took! Those all turned out really well! We will have to get together some time down your way, when the weather is nicer, and hang out at the tracks some time! Maybe I will have Yvonne drive me and Honey down to meet up with you some time! Honey likes the trains almost as much as I do!

I did go by Cabela's after I left the "Gathering"! The place was absolutely packed! I did find a good pare of boots though, that I think will take care of me in the snows and cold weather! Have you guys ever heard of The Muke Boot Company? Well, that is what I got, a pair of Muke's, and I love them! As far as boots are compared, not a bad price either! Picked up a few other little items too! A couple of energy bars to try out, and put in the two vehicles if they were any good! Yvonne and I split one in half and tried one for desert the next day, and they were really good! I plan to buy some more fairly soon, and add them to our vehicle emergency packs! You just never know what is going to happen! I've learned that the hard way a couple of times! Also picked up some fire starter sticks! Never hurts to have a back up to what you think is going to work and doesn't! It happens!

I guess I better get off of here, and let you guys get to bed! It's after midnight, do you know where all your JK Supporters are? LOL! Anyway, good night all! Take care and stay safe!

Good to see you again too. You are right, we have been lucking out on the weather for our Gatherings. The tool you won came from mqqn.
