Gave a knife away yesterday

Several weeks ago, I bought a cheap imported knife at the hardware store. It had a main blade about 2-1/2" long, a blade that accepts razor knife blades, and a little tiny flashlight in the rear of it. The thing I found interesting was that it had a liner lock and a spring lock on the same frame, something I'd never seen before.

Anyway, I honed it up and carried it around for a while, and yesterday a widow lady and I were pulling up old grungy carpet from a bedroom in her house. I thumbed open the razor knife blade and cut the carpet into manageable sized pieces, and she commented on how it looked like a handy tool.

That got me thinking, as I had noticed that she was always getting out her dull kitchen scissors to cut a piece of tape or string or open a package. So when we finished working, I went out to the truck and touched up the edge and put a fresh razor blade in it, and gave it to her. I said, "Carry this around in your pocket for 7 days, and if you're not convinced of the convenience of carrying it, then you don't have to keep it." She replied, "After I carry it around for 7 days, I don't think you'll be able to get it back from me."

Good thing it wasn't a $200 custom...

Learned that trick from my father. He never missed a chance do small favors, not just as kindness, but as a practical matter. His take was that if he did enough small favors, there'd be help for him when he needed it, and it seemed to work. He was also quick to point out that the cost to him had no relation to the value to the recipient. A couple of gallons of gas by the side of the road in middle of the night gets remembered for years.

If we can afford to be be collecting knives, we can afford to give one away once in a while. Cost to us is low, value to the recipient can be very high depending on the circumstances, and it makes our communities a better place.

All right, all right, I got one.............. wait for it.....................wait for it............

Truthfully,
Gifting knives is something that is extremely special, more so to the gifter, than the giftee. It bonds life time friendships.
