I finally got tired of the sharp points on the guard of my SOG Recon Bowie. I took a couple of files to them and shaved them down. I love it. I don't know how many times that thing has poked me somewhere. If anyone has one, I highly recomend doing it. I read somewhere that when they were first thought up, the company that made them left the guards like this so that the guys that got one could file it down to where they wanted it.

I received a new Recon in the mail today. The box looks like a previous generation box. But the guard had been cutting holes in the side of the box during transit and so forth.

Is there a way to determine the year of manufacture for a SOG. I mean the box is plain white box but there is a bar code and numbers on it and so forth. The sheath is a little different than the Scuba-Demo I got because it doesn't have a pouch and sharpening stone with it. I know it is at the earliest 2006 because the brochure in it is the typical Fusion one copyrighted 2006 version 01.07. I'm going to assume it is a 2007 knife.

The probably left those sharp points on the guard for tactical reasons. But that is an interesting question to ask. Why are the guards so sharp?

Scan it with a scanner. Cover it with a white cloth and scan it.

No scanner either. I found the cables and everything for the camera yesterday so hopefully I'll find the actual camera soon. lol

If you check out this article from the SOG website, on page 3 they discuss the guards coming pointed and people rounding them out themselves.

Oh okay, I've got that article. Chris was going to post more articles. Chris, can you still do that?

re. pointy and sharp guards. I'll make a wild SWAG that the sharp pointies are simply another aspect of adding versatility to the knife as a fighter. You could whap somebody with a pointy and cause some damage, if perhaps you couldn't get to 'em with the blade ??

Yes, I'll have to track down the magazine again and get them scanned. Thanks for the gentle reminder :)
