Eariler I reported that B-72 works. Well it does and doesn't.

It soaks into the wood fine. I'm sure it helps 'stabilize' it. But it isn't the same as the hard finish you get from the commercial stuff. Don't get me wrong I have 2 finished knifes with B72 and they are fine.

If you use a wood finish, like danish oil, or something, then a pretreat with b-72 is swell. But I like the commercially hard stuff (K&G) just too much to change.

Also for antler (and I suppose bone) the stuff is fantastic. Just what the doctor ordered: hard thru and thru, doesn't effect color much, ...

Steve

PS I didn't try pressure - just vacuum. (I even soaked under vacuum for over a week.) Maybe pressure makes a difference with wood??? Has anyone tried that? What pressure?

Hi Steve,

I thought you had switched to the Resinol 90C for stabilizing? Doesn't Resinol 90C give the correct stabilization outcome? I've yet to order some, still have some B-72 to finish using first. I agree with your observation, it's ok, but not the same as commercially stabilized stuff. I was planning to try the Resinol 90C next, as someone here had said they were using it and had found it was the same that WSSI was using I thought. I'm interested in hearing opinions.

Darren, Royal 7 was that guy that got it. I was going to too until he reported that 4 gallon minimum and a short shelf life. Ouch. Other than that, he said it works great.

Did you try pressure? I'm still wondering about that. The treated antler is very, very hard with B-72. So maybe isn't not the chemical as much as the method.

Hmmmmm.....

I have some burls in the soup with the B-72 and Mini Wax wood hardener (50/50 mix)for 3 weeks. I plan on pulling them out on Friday.

Please post the results. We're all quite interested. I'm doing my own test with Minwax and B-72. It'll be about 3 weeks until I'm done.

Any updates on the B 72 results as I just ordered some and would like to know any hints about its use.
