Gavin Hawk modified MUDD Folder

I recently was very fortune with being able to coordinate directly with Gavin Hawk (of G&G Hawk Custom Knives) toward modifying the MUDD folder that I owned. Specifically, due to my rather small hands and short fingers, I was hoping that he would consider modifying the thumb studs on my current knife, and make the studs longer.

It was a great pleasure and experience speaking to Gavin over the telephone. Initially, I was rather hesitant about broaching my request with him.... for fear that he may take it with a degree of offense (I mean, after all I was contacting him with a request to modify his existing design.... and he very well could have received my request as some sort of implication that I found his design inferior or whatever). With great relief, I found my telephone experience with Gavin to be absolutely the opposite! He was greatly interested to listen to what I wished done on my MUDD folder, and he so much as inquired what design aspects that I liked and disliked regarding the knife's design, as well as the G&G Hawk RAM II flipper and T.O.A.D. damascus folder that I own. I perceived Gavin to be absolutely geniune and sincere with everything he said and shared with me. (Again, why I might even remotely consider him to be or act in any way different or contrary... I have no answer. Point is, my experience with him was absolutely fantastic!)

Getting back to the mod....

Gavin indicated to me that he was more than willing to fabricate new thumb studs to whatever dimensions I would be happiest with. So, I asked him to simply please make the studs twice as long, but no wider.

I received the knife back from him about a week or so ago, and the below photos are what he did for me. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY KNIFE NOW!!!!! Working the blade with my stubby short thumb is much easier for me now, and carrying the knife as my EDC is a pure joy.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the post. I am in full appreciation for the skills and knives by the Hawk team. I own three of them, M.U.D.D. included.

Good modification for you.

Nice knife !!!

Are the liners made of aluminium or are they made of titanium ?

Thank you

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. That is most excellent. I DID get to handle one of their MUDD knives at Blade '06, and was quite impressed with it.
