Memorial Day comes this Monday. It’s a day that honors all those who died in service to our country. Close to 50% of my graduating USMC platoon died in Country (Viet Nam) or as a result of their injuries. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of them and others who I knew. This coming Monday—remember to remember.

I am posting this GAW in the Traditional's Forum as this is where I mostly hang out these days and that’s what I am giving away. So many great people in here. The GAW is open to all BF members who joined before May 1, 2015 and reside in the US. Post a message that you’re in and if you have a remembrance of serviceman or woman who lost their life in any war…it would be great if you posted a short message about them. OR—Any flag or America-type traditional knife photos would be cool. Or just your message of gratitude and rememberance.

Mine is Gunny Sgt. Kish who did four tours in Viet Nam. As a sergeant he was my platoon leader and a lifer. He was a tough SOB but one of the greatest guys I’ve ever known. Fearless and passionate for his troops and their mission. Three purple hearts and two bronze stars. Went down in chopper near the end of the war. Semper Fi. Thank you to all who died serving our country—we will not forget.

The GAW: Three knives. I’ll draw three random entries on Memorial Day (Monday May 25, 2015) at 6:00 pm left coast time. First draw gets their pick of one of the three knives. 2nd draw gets their pick of the last two. 3rd draw gets what is left.

RULE CHANGE UPDATE: there are as many non-entries as entries. But that really pleases me. So when I do the draw and it hits a non entry I'll take the first entry below it. I think that'll work.

These knives are all new in their tube or box.
1. GEC 21 Farm & Field Bull Buster in knifebrite
2. Vintage Northwoods Blue Jigged Bone trapper
3. CRKT Daedalus with pearl inlays Wharncliffe blade.

Thanks for the opportunity to pay tribute EyeDog. (not an entry)

My Dad was in the U.S. Navy thru WW2. He transported Marines to the black sands of Iwo Jima. My wife's Uncle (97 & still with us) helped to secure Omaha Beach, Normandy (June 1944). Previous co-worker received a Purple Heart in Vietnam and my good friend Jerry is currently very ill from Agent Orange.

We have a debt we can not pay. Let's try not to accumulate any further debt.

May God bless those who served and their families. They have earned our gratitude and deserve our absolute honor and respect.

Thank you to all those who serve and have served. Mike, please count my entry and send it to the next person who enters that has or is serving. Thanks.

Not an entry Mike, but I think it's a great idea! Thank you for your service and to all those who have and are sacrificing.
God bless the USA!

I don't have anyone who died in combat, but around this time of year I think a lot about my friend Ron. Ron was a marine and a friend I grew up with. He enlisted right out of high school. He was never able to come to peace with his experiences. He tried to make a go of it, but he took his life not long after getting out. He didn't die in battle, but he always felt like a delayed casualty to me.

As someone who has already been the beneficiary of your generosity, I'd feel bad entering for myself. That said, my best friend just got back from another deployment (thankfully much less eventful than his last one), and I know he has some people to remember from his previous deployment, and I would be happy to pass a knife on to him.

Great idea for a GAW Mike. I'm not entering, but I appreciate of all current/past service members, hats off to you all this weekend. My dad served during the Korean war, and I am thankful he's still getting around at age 81.

I am in for my brother. He served sixteen years in the Navy. Four of those years he served with SDV Team 1. He served with with Many of the men that were KIA during operation Red Wings. He has the greatest respect for those men.

This is great. I wasn't able to serve but I have many friends that were/are in service and quite a few family members as well. I'm very thankful for all the men and women that have served and given up alot for us. (This isn't an entry)

Thanks for the chance, I am in.
We have been blessed in my family- many have served and returned home alive. My great grandad served in WW1, and got a dose of mustard gas courtesy of the Germans. He survived and came home, but eventually lost a battle with cancer as a result. My grandad fought the Japanese in ww2, and brought home a sword that he took off a dead Japanese officer. The sword is proudly on display at my dad's house. My dad fought in Viet Nam, and sustained a shoulder injury that ended his military service. He counts himself very fortunate that he escaped with relatively minor injury, many from his platoon did not return.
Not my blood family, but I also want to thank the son of one of my co-workers. Her son Larry died in 2009 in Afghanistan from a suicide bomb. She talks about him often, she says she likes to keep his memory alive.

Thanks to all who have served!!!!

I'm in - thank you for this opportunity EyeDog.

My cousin hubby Dwight - VietNam vet. Always had stories of the good times and fun, when pressed for more "It was Hell" and a far off look in his eyes and a quick change of subject. Passed on this Jan 2015.

Excellent GAW Mike, and thanks so much for your service!

My pops is a Vietnam Vet as well, 25th infantry Army. My Uncle was with the 5th SF in the Highlands.

Both have had their share of up's and down's since then, but are proud of their service as am I.

Here is a photo of my pop from Tay Ninh in '69 and his original tag and P38

I am in...

My dad served in WW2 as did many of my uncles. I honor all servicemen and women and honor the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you all for your service

Very generous, I'd like to enter to give any winnings to my cousin who has served.

I know and am related to or friends with many veterans. I thank them, and all service people/veterans. I hope, and always strive, to do my best to support them in whatever small ways I can.

Thank you all for your service.

On second thought I will enter, there's a gentleman at my church that served in the Navy and he tells me stories all the time about working on these planes aboard a carrier. I'm sure he'd appreciate a new knife if I were to get one :)

Im in.

I'm always proud of those who serve. Whether drafted, or voulenteer.

My grandpa was "in" WW2. I say "in" because he downplays it. He was skilled at typing and paperwork (Was a banker after). I don't think he wver had to do more than carry an M1 carbine, and do office work. He had som pretty "shocking" photos of him self with lots of top less women. My mom was always displeased when he showed us those!

College kept my dad out of Vietnam. He wanted to be a piolet after, but during the physical, they learned he had a severe head trauma that put him unconscious for more than 48 hours, and said he would never be cleared to fly.

I have a few cousins who have done tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One of the people I am most proud of is a good friend from highschool. he did tours as a surgeon. He specializes in brain surgery now. Some of his stories from Iraq are absolutely crazy. Putting bombs in ice cream trucks. Bombs in kid toys.

I will always have vague regret that I did not serve. 9/11 happened when I was in college. Probably the only time physically I'd have been able to do it.

A big thank you to all those who have served.

My idea of freedom and knives.

Here is my cousin riding a .50 on a convoy.

note the Busse on his vest. He dad contacted me about getting him one. It ended up being donated by members on the Busse forum, Busse made it fast, and David Brown donated the sheath!

Great Elliott...I'll take you first entry as the official entry.

To the rest that have made comments but said you're not in: as far as I am concerned you are. I bet you could find someone to pass it along.

I am really touched by all the comments.

Mike

That Northwoods is a gorgeous piece of knife! Put me in please and thanks for the giveaway and the remembrances.

I would like to remember both of my grandfathers who served in WWII. One as an officer in the Army, the other as a MMII Seabee in the Navy. Luckily they both survived and had children upon returning home from the war or I would not be here typing this today.
