I'd like some opinions on these two knives vs. each other.

I owned and then sold a GB so I know what that knifes about. The CF Stretch is one that I've desired for longer than any other Spyderco. Not only havent I owned one I havent even handled one.

So...they seem alot alike as far as blade shape and overall length...but how do they stack up together?

Thanks.:thumbup:

I've got both. To me, they're nothing alike... quite different. It's late, and I don't want to wake my wife by going into my closet to fish them both out... so this is a brief comparison from memory and based on not a lot of time spent with either.

The GB is much heavier. It's a tank, as you probably know. The Stretch is not a tank. The blade of the BG is also more robust, a hollow grind vs. the Stretch's FFG. The blade shape is similar, IMO.

The GB's action is like teflon-coated ball bearings. Slick! But, one complaint I have is the liner lock is very difficult to get to and release.

That's all I have for now. :)

Both are very solid knives, holding them in hand inspires confidence. I'd estimate the Stretch as being about 15-20% lighter. Both have similar blade-length and shape though the Spyderhole "hump" is a bit more pronounced on the Stretch. Ergos on both are very good, with the Stretch being a bit more specific towards a saber grip with thumb ramped and also has a raised choil for delicate cutting. Very slim grippy handle with just enough curves for grip. GB is a bit more neutral, kind of reminds me of a basic Euro-style bushcrafter handle - fairly thick, vertical swell near the middle of the handle with slight "choils" or vertically smaller sections front and rear of handle to accomodate both saber and "hammer" grips and balanced towards the handle.

Honestly both are fantastic but if you haven't tried a CF Stretch yet try and get one. The GB is a more inexpensive knife street-priced by about $20 but construction on both is very solid.

I think that barring lateral stress you won't really find any differences in "strength" of the blade between either.

One big difference is the thickness of the handles. The Bradley fits my hand better due to it being thicker. I love my CF Stretch but don't carry it much because the handle is very narrow and it's not a comfortable for me to use. You would be hard-pressed to find a knife of better build quality that the CF Stretch in Spyderco's lineup, however.

Yep, but the flip side is that the Bradley is less comfortable to carry.

I own cf stretch just got my cuz a gb for xmas in hand id take cf stretch the peel ply cf has better grip then the cf on gb and if u stab something u won't slice of ur fingers both ugodly sharp zdp more corrosive resistant can't hard use it like u could m4 but that's why I have a busse boss

Off* oh forgot to say both SWEET knives excellent fit and finish for price is unmatched

one lasr thing and I'm going to bed ... the stretch is also better in pocket due to how much thinner it is

Both are excellent knives but different.

Firstly the Gayle Bradley. It is a chunky knife with heavy duty steel liners which are "proud" of the CF. I haven't found this affects comfort, though I did develop a callous at a hot spot in my palm:

It's a liner lock (I have had no problems with accessing the lock.) The finger "choil" is shallow compared to the stretch. I have never slipped on to the blade but I did get a small cut where my finger flesh had pushed up against the wood I was making fuzz-sticks from. Not really a criticism of the knife, just that I wasn't used to it:

Small nick:

Trying to show the grip I was using at the time of the "nick":

The CPM-M4 is great steel and should be tougher than ZDP189. It takes a great edge but isn't "stainless". The phosphor-bronze washers help give it a slick opening action and lock-up is discreetly solid, like shutting the door on a Maybach (or listening to your chaffeur do it.)

The Stretch CF is a "big-little" knife. It has a good length of cutting edge but is much thinner and lighter, as per above posts. Thin enough to neck carry in a kydex sheath (see pic below). I like ZDP189 for all the usual reasons but I think I may prefer CPM-M4 in the long run.

The peel ply is grippy but cleans up easily enough (I have used mine for deer, foraging etc.)

(A post gralloch find of Giant Parasol mushroom: went well with the tenderloin that morning)

It is a backlock with Boye dent. No PB washers and locks up with a decisive snap, but not as "greased-weasel-s**t-slick" as the GB. The thinner handles and FFG blade don't encourage heavy use so much as the GB but mine has seen hard use without complaint.

Some comparison shots (two Stretch CF, one GB, of course.)

I like both knives about equally, but I own two of the Stretch CF (one at approx 25deg inc and the other convex) and only one GB. That isn't because the Stretch is better, I just wanted different edge geometry on each.

Summary:

If I wanted a folder predominantly for hard use: GB
For everything else: Stretch CF.

Stretch for me, based on the handle. I just don't like the looks of the GB's handle. That might change if I get a chance to hold one, but the Stretch fits my hand like it was custom made for it. Take this for what it's worth considering I don't have any hands-on experience with the GB.

I didn't think I'd like the handle of the GB, either. I really like handles like that of the Manix 2. I ordered the GB anyway. When I held it and saw that it opened almost effortlessly with a gentle flick. The fit, finish, and action of the GB is unsurpassed, IMNO (in my noob opinion). :)

The GB is a marvel when you hold it. It's a great knife just for fondling! But, the blade is stout and begs to be used.

Thanks for the pics and review xavierdoc. I haven't bought a hollowground blade in years but I'm going to have to get a GB.

The GB was sweet but the weight and thickness was more than I desired for EDC.

I'm going CF Stretch hunting....its time.:thumbup:

You won't be disappointed.

Neither will you!

And only in using it do you fully appreciate it and get to know it.

you should be president of this thread for that answer AND pics. THANKS. :D

Yay! ME for Pres!

Thanks for the kind words. Far too many skeletons in my closet for political life, though ;)

I think this subforum is in good hands. Besides, at an average of 3 posts/year for 4 years my commitment might be questioned.

I've owned both, sold both, for different reasons;

The Carbon fiber Stretch would be one up on the Bradley for the texture of it's carbon fiber
a bit more grabby, plus a little better in the guard area too.

The Bradley, now if that was available with grippy G10 or even the textured CF, I'd get
that one straight away, it's a TANK of a knife and love that blade shape, it cut very nicely!

Right now I'm toting a FRN Stretch with ZDP-189 blade, for me it is a bit more comfortable
in use than the CF Stretch, which is pretty slim handle wise, to some that's a plus
for less imprint when carrying, but the FRN just feels more comfy in use to me.

Here's the VG-10 handle is similar to the ZDP-189 version, but you can see how it's shaped;

Guard area and texture of the FRN works nicely together;

a shot showing both the FRN and CF Stretch, on the FRN the guard area has a
nicer/softer feel to it's grip

While FRN scales may seem somewhat lesser in value, they sure work nice in every day carry :)

Good luck with your search!
