It is my pleasure to introduce,a new young knife maker.
Gayle Nickels is the niece of 7 yr knifemaker Jerald Nickels of Perkins Oklahoma.
Gayle has a natural aptitude for knifemaking, and in less than one year,of being schooled in Jerald's shop after school & on weekends, vacation times, etc.,she has made about 10 or so previous to the two knives I am about to show here.
These knives are built with top quality craftsmanship, unbelieveable fit & finish for a young new maker, and an elegant in hand feel as well. The CPM 154 ss (3/32" thick stock) is hollow ground & is very, very sharp & thin, making for a good cutter.
These are aprox.8" OAL knives, with 4" blades that have a 3-3/4" cutting edge, hand rubbed finish. Mammoth Ivory scales & gold plated screws.
One knife is embellished with an etched carbon Damascus bolster (Larry Donnley Damascus)etched & then heat treated. Both knives are shown with Larry Parsons leather sheaths.
Like the title says, this is simply amazing.Fantastic job Gayle!
PS,Gayle is 14 yrs of age !!
Please take a look see for yourself,
-Vince

A big hat's off to this obviously talented new young maker
Enjoy & have a great weekend,

Based on what I see in the photos, somebody has a very bright future ahead. I sure would love to "eye-ball" and "coon-finger" a couple of them.

I held these knifes they are better than the pictures. I could not believe it. The grinds are unbelieveable!!!! I have known Jerald a long time. He is takeing lessons from her know!!!!!!

Lovely! Please give her my compliments and thank you for sharing with us!

My pleasure,I love seeing stories like these
Handling the knives is even better.I warmed up to this handle shape after feeling how comfortable they are

So sweet.

I had aspirations of learning the trade from my Uncle. He was a maker out of California named Glen Hornby. I figured I would ask him to apprentice when I was done with highschool (might have just been a pipe dream). But he passes away after I graduated.

She is a sweet young lady. She tries very hard to do everything correctly and pays attention very well. She will not do something half- she does it right.
Jerald tells her it would not be hard to fund her college eduction this way if she would do it.

Thanks for the positive comments
I am sure Gayle appreciates them :). I'm hoping to sample more knives from her

Vince.....

This gal really has a eye for knifemaking.....it looks fantastic

I have a fourteen yr old daughter. She is very talented in the visual arts. That said I am amazed at what Gayle has done here.
Thanks for posting! I'll be sure to show my daughter and get her take. I'm sure she has trouble trying to figure out my obsession with knives!

Very nice knives.

Encourage this youngster to make more knives! The talent is obvious.

Kind regards,

Jos

Hey everyone! I appreciate all the posts!:) Its so funny when i tell people im only 14 but i have learned from the best!!:) ~Gayle

Beautiful work, and you have an obvious sense of style. It's great to see young folks in the craft, regardless of Gender. I started at the tender age of 13, and without any instruction, I can tell you my early knives fell far short of yours (grin)

Wow i started at 13 as well and i can't imagine starting without my uncles help!! My first knife was a folder and it almost killed me!:) It turned out ok but only because of the help from my uncle!
