Wondering if anyone out there knows of anybody making sling/pouch type sheaths for 'hawks. I've been carrying my GB Dakota on hikes for yrs in my belt just back of my R hipbone - saw a depiction of an old sling/pouch carrier not long ago and thought I'd give one a try. I've heard that they beat yr leg from some, but that they work great from others. Like to decide for meself.

Try Tess Neilson at Mountainhollow.net. J. makes does the steel and Tess the sheaths. She could set you right up and her work is great. I think they have some examples on their site under tomahawks....RW

thanks, RW. yr right, the 'hawks on their website are pretty unique. I'll give Tess a shout.

How is the Dakota hawk? A while back I was gonna buy one but didn't wanna spend that much. Always wondered how a GB hawk would perform.

I carry the GB Dakota mostly because I wanted something that could act as both weapon and tool. As long as one doesn't have to split large pieces of wood, the Dakota (French Trade Axe) performs admirably as a firewood-getter, especially if one uses a longer handle - I use a 24" piece of wormy chestnut that a woodworker friend in Townsend TN made for me to replace GB's hickory handle (which is a good one, only a little too thin for people with large hands). In addition to the Dakota, I carry a TOPS Pasayten for general use (as well as the ubiquitous SAK Huntsman and a CR Sebenza). I used to carry only a Randall 14, but I find the 'hawk/Pasayten combo very versatile and overall more satisfactory than depending on the 14 for everything. Of course, the tomahawk doesn't perform as well as, say, the Wildlife hatchet or the Sm. Forest Axe, but it is very easy to carry, super lightweight, and surprisingly ergonomic/fucntional for camp chores. The price is, of course, prohibitive, but I'm glad I have one - aesthetics wins out over common sen$e again.
