Hi guys - I'm interested in getting a Gransfors large carving axe # 475 for wood carving projects. I've done a little reading online, and understand that Willie Sunqvist helped in the axe's design. He designed it so that (when holding the axe with head up, handle facing downward) the slightly concave bevel on the left side of the axe is longer than on the bevel on the right side. This is for use by right handed people and helps with precise control when carving.
My research indicates that this is how the axes came originally from the factory. Then for awhile they were flat on one side with no concave bevel. And also, they put out these axes with bevels that are equal length on both sides.
I was reading Sandqvist's book recently, and the longer bevel on the left side for right handed carvers makes sense to me. Has anyone bought a GB Large Caving Axe recently ? How are the bevels set up ? Are you right handed ? Thanks in advance for your comments -
