Many have asked the question "Why is the Gransfors Bruks mini hatchet priced higher than nearly all of their other larger more substantial axes?" To me the answer is clearly that the mini has become a novelty and many (mostly Americans) are willing to pay more for a lesser product(in materials). Nonetheless, its a wonderfully practical piece I enjoyed using on my wilderness trek along the Pacific Crest Trail last week. I recently had the fortune of purchasing a mini from Darren Cutsforth here in Portland for only $75. Just before his price raise to $88, which is still less than nearly everyone else who's now selling them for $99, plus shipping. Best of all Darren let me stop by and pick from his litter of mini cuties. Darren is a great guy, I recommend doing business with him at Cutsforthknives. Its hard to convince people that a tiny hatchet from Sweden at nearly $100 is a better buy than 5 Gerber (Fiskars of Finland) hatchets at Home Depot for only $19.99 each, but thats ok, I prefer traditional workmanship and materials and I'm willing to pay for it in this ever increasing world of homogenization.

I read somwhere that it is more expensive because it requires more skill to produce the Mini.
Anyone else hear that?

Steven, I too have heard the same explanation. I have one in my truck's mini-BOB, and absolutely love it. Small enough to tuck in a pocket, and bigger working than it looks.

The mini is more expense to manufacture,,,,it takes more time and care due to its very small size. Only LP makes the mini, it was his initial concept and he is the most experienced maker in the shop.

Time = money = higher retail price.

FK
