I posted this in the Wilderness and Survival Forum, but no one was able to help me. Do any of you Axe guys have any thoughts on which of the above is "better" and why? I am a hunter who plans to use this sized axe for basic wood splitting, limbing etc.. Thanks.

The difference is in the poll of the axe which is rounded and smoothed in the Hunters axe as an aid to using it to skin animals. Either axe will perform the chores mentioned with no problems whatsoever.

If price becomes a consideration wetterlings offers a couple nearly identical axes for about half the price. Hwever they are not a nicely finished up.

I went with the small forest axe. Partially because I liked the standard smooth handle, partially because it matched the larger American felling axe I bought at the same time better. My guess is that if you plan to use the poll for more driving/pounding, get the forest axe. Skinning wasn't an issue for me.

I am surprised that the guys on the wilderness page could not help as those axes are very popular over there. I would love a GB but I have a few nice similar cutting tools. I do know it is worth having a close look at the whole line because they have a confusing system and
some similar sized axes. GB makes great hand tools the way they have for 200 years which I think is pretty cool.
