GB2 Desert Ironwood scales

Welcome to the addiction (my particular brand of knife addiction is making handles). Those are pretty cool. I made a set of GB2 scales in stabilized Koa, but when it was all said and done I could not get the blade to center again. Please post up again when you finish them!

By the way do you know how you plan to finish them?

Desert ironwood doesn’t necessarily need a finish, but I planned to sand down to 1000 grit and test a Tru-Oil finish on the underside of one of the scales.

That looks gorgeous, nice job. I have some Big Leaf Maple burl that I plan on trying to make some new scales for my GB1 this spring. The GB1 & 2 sem like they would be pretty simple make.

Tru Oil works great with ironwood! Below is with the following:

Sand to 800 grit, then Tru Oil. I use about 6 coats with wet sanding at 800 grit to fill a few pits and checks. I am not a fan of high gloss, so when the finish is glossy and uniform, I buff it back with 0000 steel wool to a dull satin. Then I apply a couple coats of wax to bring it back up to a nice satin. The wax is way easier to maintain in the long run.

Thanks. It is the knife pictured in my avatar. Ironwood is my personal favorite for its pure beauty, grain complexity and depth of chatoyance. Handle work is kind of my thing.... As far as ironwood goes, it's worth doing whatever it takes to bring out the best in it.

Sweet! To really make it pop I'd give it about 5 coats of Tung Oil Finish with very fine sandpaper between coats.
