I received an 891 and 893 over the weekend.
I am really impressed with both knives.
Both knives feel more lively in hand than I expected.
I'd like to hear more about the design history.
There are some characteristics of both models that are unique.

The handle designs are the best I've seen in quite some time.
Micarta and G10 handles are often too slick for my tastes. Over the last few years I've more often than not ended up using grip tape to improve the texture.
I won't be wrapping these.
I like that there are no grooves or filings on the tang itself. Not needed in my opinion.

How about some input from Buck about the designs and how they came about.
Any info would be appreciated.

ill let Jeff or factory insiders answer your requests on history and development.

on micarta on other knives being slick you can sand it to your taste of texture. you can make it very aggressive in texture or polished smooth. either way can be altered easily back and forth.

remember to not breathe fibers and such while sanding. do outside and wear a mask capable of blocking the fiber sizes.

..... How about some input from Buck about the designs and how they came about.
Any info would be appreciated.
Tenbeers, welcome to the Buck forum. The GCK knives are new in the 2020 catalog so I suspect the lack of response is that there are just not enough of them out there yet. Yes, this is a factory sponsored forum but it is not common for anyone from Buck to actively participate in the discussions here so the information you desire about the development of the knife may not be readily forthcoming. Please feel free to share your own pictures and observations here with us. /Roger

One reason I requested info was because of the promotional copy:

“Each design was field tested by military operatives in the most demanding conditions and that feedback was helpful in the overall design.”

I thought maybe there were design details based on military input that would be interesting.

Thanks anyway.

We do routinely show design concepts/protos to expert users outside the company for their feedback on design and function. Any of the feedback and commentary would something I can't discuss here. I will see if I can find some more detail on what we did for you.

Jeff

I can understand not revealing anything that would compromise military tactics etc.

The spear point knife is fairly unique due to it's narrow blade width and the tanto has the tapered spine cutouts. The 3D handle design isn't something I've encountered before.
These are just a few things that I thought might've had some specific design benefit.

I've always been fascinated by knives geared toward military usage. I'm sure that when more time passes there will be reports and reviews by military personnel.
I'd bet these 2 models will be popular with soldiers in the field.
