G'Day everyone, Im from Australia and I have just joined this forum so as I can do some axe research. I am a novice wood chopper. I have a number of racing axes and a couple of collection ones also.

I have a couple of Plumb axes, I also have a True Blue Racer. I am trying to convince a bloke to sell me a near new Kelly.

In my axe box I have:

3 x Tuatahi Race Axes,
1 x Austo's Stewart Racing Axe
1 x Aussie Speed Axe
1 x Keesteel Racing Axe (also known as a Keech, as they are cast in the Keech Foundry)

I also have a couple of generic "work" axes for everyday cutting, one is a "Pope" the other is a "Gardenmaster"

I am currently looking for: American Firemans Axe, Polaski, Any Racing Axes, Double Bit Axe, etc, if you are in Australia, and have something to sell, please PM me. Ill post up some pics of my gear soon!

Cheers & great to meet you all!

Hi Log Cutter...While working for the Queensland forestry dept in the early '70s I became a fan of the Aussie 'Hytest' working axe. A good all rounder for bush work. They made a pretty good racing axe as well.
Glad you like the 'Tuatahi'. You will be aware the name is Maori language and means 'Number one' or 'The Best'.
Tuatahi has been manufacturing Racing Axes and Saws for over 25 years. They are a family operated business and their products are currently exported to Australia, Fiji, USA, Canada, England, Wales, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, New Caledonia, Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Greece, South Africa, Ireland, Ukraine, Brazil, Romania, Tahiti, Italy, Luxembourg and Hungary as well as distributed throughout New Zealand.

Like you Kelly and Plumb are high on my list. I have two Hytest. One is dull with fat cheeks for splitting the other I can shave with.

regards...Frank

@Frank-New Zealand Yes I was told thats what Tuatahi meant, they do indeed make top notch gear, I have used one of their M-Tooth racing saws, great product! it really is, I am going to order one of thier stickers for the back window of my ute, thats how good i think thier gear is!
A Hytest, thats another one on my list also!

There you are! Some pics of all bar 1 of my race axes and one of my collection, I have 3 others (that includes my work axes)

Welcome, our brother from down under.

welcome... wait until memphis hears about your racing axes... he'll probably come visit you:D

Have I really made my weakness for racing axes so transparent??!! BTW...that Keech is sweet! Reminds me of a Lamborghini...mixed with a truck. ;)

Welcome fellow axe lover. Glad to have ya. Australia is the one axe market that has been off limits for me due to shipping costs alone. However one can always make exceptions.

You will find a wealth of knowledge on this forum, from collectiong, using, advice, tips, techniques, etc. It has been one of my great privileges to use this forum for the last couple years. Great friends are also to be found on here, whether it is for info, trades, or the telling of high tales of days gone by.

I hope you enjoy.

@Memphis "Kinda like a Jaguar, cept she was a truck! I used to crash into her just so I could done spoke to her"............lmao yeah cant wait to get started!

@Operator1975, thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome Log Cutter and thanks for showing us those beasts. If I'm not mistaken, those depressions at the poll are for a file jig. Do you have one? If so how do you like it?

On which axe are you referring to? I dont have or use a file jig (at the moment) Tuatahi make and sell axe and saw jigs on thier website. I think the price was $150 NZD. Which I thought was fairly reasonable really. But no I hand stone and hone all my axes. I have some 30 odd sharpening stones. Ill get a pic up probably next week if I can. In there are a couple of round pocket stones, a massive double sided stone, several smaller double sided stones and a couple of ceramic hones. Also I have a couple of fairly hard, well worn dark coloured stones, unsure what they are...could be Arkansas black? and also a small rectangle shaped white stone. So yeah a real mix!

It looks like all of your axes except the plumb have a small depression near the back. I thought those were made as a pivot for file jigs, but I have no experience with it myself. I've been thinking about buying one of those Tuatahi jigs but I keep hoping someone else will get one first and post a report on it.

Thats fair enough, why spend the cash if its not gunna be what ya need? shows that you are using yer brains mate! I also have 2 new axes headed for my collection: a Hytest, and a Dandenong Kelly-still with original red paint and the leather blade cover!!!! Pics up when I get em!
