Saturday was a great day gear wise, and just reinforce the fact that I need a good camera. Visited Washington Monument SP and a small portion of the Appalachian trail. I am proud to say that my fat ass made a vast improvement getting to the monument, which is a short hike, but at high elevations for fat people, can be taxing. I was surprised when I got to the top, it seemed like the last time I was there, last year, it took a lot longer. I've lost about 30 lbs since February, and it is amazing what an improvement that can be. Having an inhaler will help too.

Gear wise, I stopped by a local knife shop, and traded for a Victorinox Swisstool Spirit, a BHK bushcraft style knife (name began with an M, gonna have to get back to the store owner on that one), a CRK Nyala (great knife), a Mora of Sweden 2080 (very comfortable handle) and a RAT branded RC6. The owner was trying to get more CRK and BHK knives in, and I showed him my Boat Tail Scandi as a possible addition to the store (nope, I didn't leave it with him ;)). I also picked up an Opinel no 8, and a Maxpedition mini Roly Poly. I wanted a water bottle holder for my later hike, and asked if he had paracord. No paracord, but an outfitter a couple blocks down had some.

Stopped in a fly fishing shop on the way down, almost bought a Filson hat. Bought about 50 ft of paracord at the outfitters, which turned into 78 ft. While at the outfitters, I noticed some over the shoulder Nalgene water bottle holders. I liked the one with the zippered pocket on it, but went instead for the bare bones model. On the way back to my car, I bought the Filson hat. Not a summer hat, but after seeing some members Filsons, I wanted one.

Got to use the Opinel, the Nalgene water bottle holder, and the Spirit all day Saturday. When I got home, I found an old web belt and some webbing I got on another forum from a generous member. So, over the shoulder belt solved for the mini Roly Poly.

Staring at the gorgeous view at the monument, and at various spots along the trail, Antietam and in Hagerstown etc, I realized that I need a good camera. I bought an el cheapo camera at Walmart, that promptly crapped out on me after a couple months easy use. So, no pics, sorry. I had a great time.

While my hikes were small, maybe about 1-2 miles for each, I realized that I needed to go prepared. Don't laugh, I did. There must've been about 200 people at the monument, all over the place etc. Holiday weekend, it's bound to be packed. I had my cellphone, inhaler, water bottle, some paracord, field glasses at the monument (have to find my smaller ones, these were huge, a PIA to carry), small folder, fixed blade in my back pocket, walking stick, atrial fibbrillation med. Overall, after hiking to the monument, and back up the AT (like I did much, maybe a mile), I only had one small asthma attack. With my size, I am lucky I don't have asthma attacks often. A couple in the last year.

Anyway, I am sorry I gypped you guys with the lack of pics, but I had a great time. Those of you that know me know I am a big guy, losing 30 lbs was a helluva improvement. Knees, afibb and asthma. No worries when I got home, no worries yesterday.

Next time I hope to have pics.

It sounds like a great day, buying toys AND playing with them :)
Congrats on the weight loss!

I love buying gear, and will admit to some impulse purchases.

Sounds like you had a really good day :D
