Gear

Joseph,

hi and welcome

What senario do you want to prepare for?
What is your mobility and your abllity to carry a bag?

This gives basics for an answer

Thanks

I'd suggest a waistpack of some sort. I'm not sure how you'd take it on and off, but you probably have a system set up for that by now. And a messenger-type bag could work, maybe, but I'm not sure how well it would stay up, what with both your arms being amputated at the shoulder and all that. (When you said "disabled," you meant "both arms amputated at the shoulder," right?)

By the way, here's a link to a discussion on bear defense. The next time you try to avenge your brother, (sorry about Fritz, I know you two were close,) you may find some of the items mentioned there helpful. Assuming you can somehow manage to work them, of course.

Look into one of the packs that you carry on the front. I am new to this forum but I am sure we can help you through this.

I have to use a cane, normally. But I do use a Rolling Walker most of the time. I can't walk that far and can't for long periods of time. I have looked at some packs on line and IT'S don't know where any stores are around the Pelzer, S.C. area. This is in Greenville, South Carolina.

I looking at a scenario of survival and my mobility isn't that good. Can't get around unless I use a walker and or a cane.

I don't know what a rolling walker is, but if it has wheels you should let it carry the weight somehow.

Both of my arms are fine. When I said disabled, it's from a surgery that I had several years back on my back. I'm now partialy paralyzed in my left leg. I have 70% loss of use in this leg and that's the purpose of the rolling walker. I can't walk far nor can I stand for long periods of time. ie: 15-20 minutes or so.

What the heck? Why would you assume he had no arms when he said disabled?

Anyways maybe something like one of those rolling luggage type bags. I got a small duffel bag one that I keep all my files and folders in for my business, it looks like a regular duffel has a bunch of pockets and stuff but hidden in the bottom is a handle that extends out and it has small wheels. This could be used also to lean on a bit if your leg starts to bother you. With this option your not adding any extra weight to your body and onto the leg. I know it's not a great choice for moving quick but it seems you leg would hold you back from running anyways. Having something like that would allow you to carry a good amount of gear in the duffel on your shoulder if you want, or pop the handle out and tow it behind. Another good thing is you can strap extra gear to the outside of it and drag more then fits in the bag.

I've gotten a lot of great ideas that I'm going to persue. I thank everyone for all of ya'll have given me something ta think about. I'll let ya know what IS come up with.

So your Rolling Walkers is an intergral part of your BOB kit
Does yours have a bag attached and a seat attached?
If so then will you still want a seperate bag?
What sort of weight can you carry because of your back injury?

There is still the question
What senario do you want to prepare for?
Then you will know what gear you might need

Well, I'm looking to prepare for total take over of key areas like roads, supplies, gas stations, etc. I have been looking to what I really need to do, but since I'm on limited funds, well that's my main issue. I can't lift over 20 lbs and can't stand for long periods of time. I do weigh in at 400 lbs and I've tried to exercise, but there again the issues of my back and of my left leg have a large play in that. Anything you think of let me kniw, for I'm very serious about seeing what I need to do. My walker supports 500 lbs and has a basket for small items under the seat.

This is semi-sorta in my lane. I'm a disabled vet with no real use of my left arm & hand. Can't have a pack strap over my left shoulder either. Always looking for ways to modify gear to work with my disability.

With your disabilities the pack weight on your back would just aggravate the problem. Since you need a rolling walker anyway, I would look at modifying one to carry gear , or building a pack with wheels. The wheels on most medical walkers are not well suited for trails in my opinion. A wooden container with enlarged mower/go-kart wheels that has an elevated handrail for support and walker use could be a cool project. There are off-road walkers, but they can be pricey - http://www.elderluxe.com/trionic-veloped-trek-all-terrain-walker/

As for cardio exercise suggestions. Where I use to work recommended swimming for patients with mobility/back problems.

Hope this helps.

Halfneck ya have given me several ideas. I have been thinking on ome of those same lines ya just mentioned but ya allowed me ta bring 'em all together. The wheels won't be ya problem, for I've been looking at the bicycle type wheels.Ya got my thoughts all on the same page now and I thank ya Sir. Now, ta fix it so I can afford the materials.

Joseph..Howdy and welcome. I'm sorry to hear about your disability, While bugging out has received allot of attention in recent years. I think part of true survival-ism is working with what you have. If mobility is an issue covering large expanses of potentially dangerous terrain might be difficult to do without attracting unwanted attention. Something to consider would be bugging in as a 1st line followed by bugging out should your situation become compromised. A great read on these sorts of things and just a great read in general is "when all hell breaks loose" by Cody Lundin.
If you are set on buggin out someone mentioned a jogging stroller, or even a shopping cart (ala the road) might be worth considering.

I wish ta thank everyone for the ideas and some I already had but ya showed me a new way ta incorpotate them. Again, thanks for all the help.

I was looking on the Sportsmansguide web-site and located a couple of Military Map/Utility cases for under $17.00. One can be used for ammo and the other for clothing + extras. What are your thoughts?

The scenario you describe sounds more like priorities for sustainability rather than "survival" need to come into play.

Look into quit serious replenishable small game methods: slingshots, slingbows, cheap crossbows, things you can makeshift ammo for rather popping off amuniton.

Good and numerous firetools, things of the sort.
