I don't want to give Mantis Knives my money, but it's the Hawk brothers, and it has a planetary gear set. I'm very conflicted.

List price is halfway to $300, and it's Mantis' proprietary blend of 11 herbs and spices steel. I really, really like planetary gear sets, but now that I know the price, I can wait. This thread is mostly a PSA, anyway.

Small correction: Grant and Gavin are father and son, not brothers.

I saw an early, handmade prototype for that model about ten years ago. Grant and I spent some time discussing the concept, and he wasn't satisfied with the design as configured then (the internal wheel arrangement was different). It looks like he finally got the kinks worked out. What a beautiful knife construction!

While I'm not a Mantis guy, I don't care who's putting Hawk designs into the market as long as they're being made. In my opinion, the Hawks are, quite simply, knife mechanism geniuses.

Good to know. Thank you!

Looks sweet, but ive never heard of m-vx steel or mantis knives.
Is it a typo on their page that says the blade is m-vx and the handle is aus 8?
Those gears are awesome though

Theyve said the steel is equivalent to AUS-8.

Love me some weird knives, and this is pretty up there. But 260 for some AUS-8? Weak. I get itll perform most tasks for most people , but paying that price for that steel hurts a bit. Also did mantis do something? I dont recall the name.

I'm completely conflicted here too. A large chunk of my collection is G&G Hawk designs. From Kershaw to full customs.

M-vX is (from what I've been able to determine from prior discussions here) a proprietary bullshit steel from only Mantis. To say Mantis has a checkered history would be putting it too kindly. The price is also high for the materials. I want it, but am struggling to justify it to myself.

I know their claims about the steel are total garbage, but where did you see them claim it was equivalent to AUS-8? It's supposedly a proprietary tool steel, if I remember correctly.

Either way, sad to see a cool design get this treatment. There are companies that aren't hot trash that could have made this, likely for the same price or less with better materials.

It wasnt them. I saw multiple comments stating that mantis had made that claim. So who knows.

I've never heard of Mantis before, what's the problem with them?

Shady business practices and knives of dubious origin. Long story, plenty of threads to search for more detail.

What J said. Also, Mantis got caught early on flat out lying about its blade alloys.
The owner of Mantis also owns Quartermaster knives. They've been caught telling whoppers, also.

As for the gears? NO. Absolutely no interest. I want a working knife in my pocket, not a bunch of clap trap.

M-VX is equivilent to whatever steel they could get cheapest at the time.

Looks cool but not my thing.

If you actually use the knife, I can imagine crap getting caught in the gears and gumming/jamming the deployment.

I'd love to support g&g hawk but not going to go anywhere near a mantis or quartermaster. Nor should anyone else. Really bad companies that lie and don't provide materials they say they are. G&g know this yet they still gave them this design. Really sad. Really really sad.
