I have a GEC 14 that is a ppp knife. The blade has the etching on one side but they didn’t etch the ppp on the other. Is this normal on a sfo? I’ve never seen his.

I have seen others with the ppp etching. This was a ppp knife. Mr.Campagna even said the same, it was a ppp knife.

The consensus from old posts on another forum is that only the first few of any run gets the “ppp” etch.

If it doesn’t have the ppp etch it’s not a ppp knife. It doesn’t seem to add a premium anyway.

Yeah I never understood why anyone cared too much… nobody seems to pay extra for PPP knives. Heck, maybe yours is a “one of one” that missed the etch ;)

I think the PPP etch is only used on GECs production knives, not on SFOs. I could be wrong though.

The 2016 SFO, single blade #14 TC barlows absolutely had PPP etches…
Not sure why yours doesn’t.

Same knife below- with PPP etch.
Not sure why yours doesn't but my guess is either it was just missed at the factory or has been removed by someone- possibly while trying to get rid of a pepper spot or something. Can you catch any of the ghost remains of an etch?

I know they did! And don’t know why mine doesn’t.

This is not true. The first line all get the etch - generally the Tidioute line of a pattern is released first, so they generally get the etch.

It could cause a problem for a collector if it’s not there…
It could also be a “one of” mistake, which could also be of interest to a collector.
Questions might be raised either way.

The premier of the pattern gets the etch, regardless of sfo or not - including a few of our Forum knives!

Unless you have owned since new and thus can confirm etch was absent (which seems unlikely given the plethora of “s” models out there with imperceptible flaws), I would think etch was polished off by previous owner. Etches today are basically a way to confirm if a knife is “mint” or not.

I'll third the comment that Ramrodmb Ramrodmb stated. I've polished off a few etches on GEC knives and there has always been a ghost of the etch left behind when using only polishing compound. The ghost can only be detected in certain lighting or when holding the blade at a certain angle. If the etch was ever there in the first place, the op should be able to see the "ghost' of it unless that side of the blade has been sanded or reground.
