Hi Folks! Yesterday a brand spankin' new GEC #73 in Cocobolo arrived at my house, and today its big brother arrived - a #23 clad in Ebony. I did a little write-up on the #73 yesterday, and it's floating around. This #23 is its equal in F&F in every way: an even pull all the way home and back - rated at a moderate 5 to 6, no blade wobble, and this one is perfectly centered when closed.

First impression when I pulled it out of the tube: ..... something like Crocodile Dundee's "Naw this is a knife!" Yikes, this sucker is big! Now keep in mind that my usual carry is a GEC Conductor, and that yesterday I thought the #73 was pretty big. The #23 makes the #73 seem like a penknife!

I can actually pinch the blade open on the #23 - if my finger & thumb aren't too oily. The lack of a swedge on the Tidioute helps in that regard. I can almost pinch open the #73, but the swedge on the Northfield makes it a little too narrow. I probably won't be pinching them open anyway because there's not much blade sticking up above the liners & handle, but my point is that neither one is a nail breaker.

Bottom line: I probably won't carry the #23 much - it's waaay more knife than I'll ever need. No regrets about purchasing it, however - very cool knife! But for now the "little";) #73 has stolen my heart. :D

Carry a #23 Northfield in my back pocket daily. Use it as a work knife. The lanyard makes the knife slip out easy, and yes I can pinch the blade open. Best work knife IMO.

That's great news Keith!! The #23s are beasts but the single blade ones are very manageable and the #73s really do make a great carry knife.

The #23 is indeed a beast and rides just fine in a backpocket. just make sure you're wearing a belt.

Congrats again Keith!

I am with you on the size of the 23. I will take a 73 any day of the week. I can understand why the 73 stole your heart. Its very pocket friendly with a lot of blade. For the 3-3/4" GEC range I think it has about the most blade length actually. It also has just about the thinnest profile blade IMO. It is a great slicer, easy to sharpen and a practical EDC knife. All that adds up in my book :)

Thank you all for your comments! I can certainly see that if you needed to do a lot of cutting throughout the day the #23 would be a fantastic knife. Nice full-hand grip and plenty of blade to get the job done. Or if you just like carrying a bigger knife. :D For my purposes, all things considered, the single blade #73 will suit me better ..... I think you summed it up pretty well, Kevin. :)
