I just received my Northfield #26 Pocket Sunfish. I opted for the clip blade and the ivory handle. First, let me say that this is a top quality knife. I have a few other GECs and this one fits right in quality wise. Only gripe I have is that the spring on this thing is stiff. I mean really stiff. So stiff, the dude who built this knife must have been on a mega dose of Viagra at the time. Or maybe it was the guy who designed it. Who knows...

All in all, awesome job GEC!

Pics later...

I've got one with Cocobolo wood handles. It's back at GEC now getting un-stiffened. I called Christine at GEC and she acknowledged that the Watch Pocket Sunfishes were pretty darn stiff. She said to send it in and they'd take care of it. I'm anxious to see how how if feels when it comes back - I've never sent one in to GEC before. I can usually get 'em operating pretty well, if need be, with a good cleaning & lube, but not this little fella.

Looking forward to your pics, bonusmarple. Here's mine:

I might've gotten lucky. My #26 is pretty firm, but not too much---in fact, it's just about right. Depending on how slick the blade surface is at the moment (or how slick my fingers are!), I can even pinch it open.

I did buy mine used, and the previous owner said it had had some good pocket time, so maybe it's been broken in.

Very nice looking, Andrew. It looks like yours might be a 2009 #26 Sleeveboard? Primitive bone? I think the 2012 Northfield #26's (called a Watch Pocket Sunfish) have pinched and threaded bolsters. It's nice to know your's isn't a nail buster.

Thanks, Keith, and you are right on all counts. Mine is the older version, and primitive bone it is.

And let me return the compliment. Your new version coco clip is outstanding.

IF they would offer a drop point and coping blade i would buy one but until then I will hold off. HINT FREAKING HINK

I'm interested in this pattern as smaller knives can be really useful.
I do favour a heavy spring, but, if it's really hard to open then this puts me off. I'm eager to hear how the knives come back from a 'de-tuning' at GEC.

Thanks for your comments, Andrew. :)

Will, I'll be sure to post my impressions when I get the knife back. I like the little two-blade #25 jacks - they give a nice chunky grip for such a small knife - but I tend to carry these smaller knives in my watch pocket, and I've got used to a single spring knife there, so the two-blade #25's feel a little too chunky there. Hence, I decided to try the Watch Pocket Sunfish ..... but being so darn confounded hard to open, I never carried it either. Sorry to ramble ..... I'll let ya know how it turns out. ;)

Keith, I do admire that Coco 26. Been brooding about getting one as I like single-spring knives above all else. Was toying with the idea of an earlier one with Wharncliffe Master.

Thanks, Will

That is for sure a pretty knife. And maybe I should start a new thread, but I don't "get" the sunfish/toenail...no offense. I would love to know why you like this pattern. Seems so bulky and heavy to me???

This knife is fairly thin and light. It is about 3" long and about 1/3" thick. The profile lets it basically disappear in your pocket. It fits perfect in the watch pocket on your jeans.

That's a great looking knife - definitely a keeper. The ivory is fantastic! Thanks for the pics.

Thanks. Might have to give it a shot. One of the few patterns I have never used.

It looks like GEC did a great job with the cocobolo! You should post when it comes back "detuned" from GEC. Inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks - I'm pretty impressed with GEC's cocobolo, too. I'm not sure of their turn-around time for "detuning", but I'll post my impressions when I get it back.

Hi all. I got my Watch Pocket Sunfish back from GEC today and thought I'd update this thread. Here's what I said earlier .....

"I've got one with Cocobolo wood handles. It's back at GEC now getting un-stiffened. I called Christine at GEC and she acknowledged that the Watch Pocket Sunfishes were pretty darn stiff. The knife came back with a perfect 5 to 6 pull on both blades! There's no evidence of a "fix" - no scratches, dings, etc. Both blades are still without wobble and tucked next to the liner, yet not rubbing the liner or each other. Needless to say I'm impressed and very satisfied with the results. Thanks Christine & GEC!

Excellent! Thanks for the update-- I've been wondering. The #26 I saw was so stiff, the store person struggled to open the pen blade with a steel "blade key." I'm very encouraged that the issue is fixable.

Enjoy your newly returned, now-usable knife. :-)
