Got my GEC Tidioute #721110 Jigged Bocote 1 of 50 mini lockback today with courtesy my good old friend: Mr Murphy. There's bit gap between liner and backspace but its ok. Up and down and side to side bladeplay is quite unacceptable for this price range knife *sighs* I got both bladplays again.

Oh, well, I was messing bit with superglue while thinking what should I do, send it back to retailer for them to send it back to factory, go back paperwork for customs declaration with yet again danger of paying more extra funds due our customs (I refer my GEC Case#2: GEC #735109L Yellow Rose) when tad of super glue dripped on the knife. Well more than tad I whiped it off immediately. Result: Bit sticky lock but 0 blade play  so glue foxed blade play but I am still not sure should I contact GEC just in case.

Anyway. I have 3 GEC's 2 of them now has had vertical and horizontal bladeplay out of box and all my three GEC's have been serialized 1 of 50 series... Ouch, I am going to se if I get Tidioute 481110BE later on. If that has problem I seriously need to consider asking retailer check GEC for blade play prior shipping.

However 721110 is now in use though. Its light and currently 0 bladeplay with solid lockup. Its light, its comfy it has lanyard hole and my Beaver Tail has very nice shield and comfy Bocote handles. Great knife, though I am not sure how long my accidental fix lasts...

sorry for your prenominal run of poor knives. i think i would do one or other--find another retailer or inform him to check for loose blades. this is so uncommon i suspect you are getting the bottom of the barrel from your supplier. in over 100 gecs i've only had one loose blade. the only reason i have so strongly championed gecs is that their quality up to this time has been fantastic. however if the quality does drop i will not purchase or recommend gec.i certainly have a decent collection at this time but wo'nt pay for products of diminishing quality.however in fairness to gec i still find them to be the best factory knife in the world.

Thanks Dennis. I've sent mail for my retailer about checking future Gec's about bladeplay. My Finnish retailer have to import all Gec's. There's no official retailer of Gec's in Finland so they order from their USA sources per my requests, limiting bit availability of Gec's. First GEC was phenomenal in Quality. #2 after fixing was phenomenal. Now 721110 is phenomenal if my "fix" lasts. Gec's are one of the few knives that never need to sharpen out of box.

I'm thinking to see Gec's from the states that carry them in fair price. Sure, I have to deal custom's too but there's no way I can get poor Gec's from two places. If I do, I put job application to GEC's Quality Control :D

You should definitely ask the seller to check before sending across the pond. I have yet to find one lockback, and maybe 1 in 100 other patterns, with any movement; thus the odds seem very long in you getting a repeat problem right out of the tube. I have not found ANY GEC knives with blade play that would ever pose a problem or that you could feel without the old hold knife in one hand and blade between fingers of other hand method.

It would get very expensive to buy these thru a middle man then ship internationally twice before getting one to suit you. Also, if you use the knife at all, the superglue trick won't last. Somewhat like putting wood shavings in the oil of an old car; just last long enough to make it someone else's problem. But if it is for your collection and makes you happy, then should be fine.

Retailer (Finnish) from whom I bought this knife offered to replace the knife for free as they have one in stock. Sounds good enough for me as they agreed that price range knife should be out of box solid without any DIY-things.

My lockbacks are like that. If you grip the blade and the handle, you can feel that there is a slight "give" there. Not knowing how the knives are made; I'm not sure if this is necessarily an issue, or peraps a small tolerance is even required. I haven't noticed it while using my knife at all. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

I purchased a beautiful Red Stag Lockback. I thought there was to much blade play. I loved the knife though, so after a few hours within receiving it I sent to GEC for repair. I offered to pay to have the blade tightened up. They said they would do it for free. After 2MONTHS I called and they said it took so long because the owner of the company had to fix it himself. When it was returned to me it had even more blade play then before. Holding the knife by the blade in one hand only and shaking it, it snapped and moved like crazy. Luckily my dealer refunded my purchase. I took the money and my knife funds for the next 3 months and bought a William Henry Kestrel. It is absolutley perfect in every way.

I was really into making a purchase of a GEC lockback. But after reading more than a few posts of blade play, :( I ordered a Boker Tree Brand lockback instead. Sure hope it has no issues.
Shopping on line, is kinda like buying a pig in a poke. :p

Gec's are one of the few knives that never need to sharpen out of box.

I've bought four GEC's so far and have not experienced any problems with bladeplay and all four tend to be categorised by me as absolute quality!!
However they all needed sharpening otb! Not quite as dull as a Queen knife but definitely not sharp either. But since I don't mind (and even enjoy) touching up a blade, I won't hesitate to buy more or recommend them!

Jani..
Its not often that I would complain..but if I bought a knife/ knives through a dealer..that wasnt up to scratch...I would let him know...first time would be...hey...could you please check this out...etc
2nd time...the time, the expensive shipping..the wait would start to bug me..and I would be a bit more assertive...and that would be clear..after the first time of a knife having to be returned...I think a note beside that customers name ..CHECK QUALITY BEFORE SENDING!!-or a general all round in quality control would be automatic before any second knife was sent to that most important person-the customer!
take the above advice... dont super glue ...because 1, it wont last, and 2, you will always know in your mind that the knife has that fault-that isnt realy fixed..that is not what buying a new knife is about!
Good luck my friend!

Thanks Dunchan, so far 721110 has lasted nicely. It is very nice and light knife. I like it alot and perhaps there really is need for some tolerance for parts to get solid lock up. Anyway I have now new source from the States for my GEC's, I save alot and get knives inspected before shipping.
