Hello all,

Do any of you regularly carry and use GEC's #45 or #46? I am still on the fence about these--any sage advice is appreciated. Pictures are fun too.

I have pictures of mine in the Elephant Toenail thread. I don't regularly carry them, but I have, and will again.

Thanks Gruntmedik, I've seen that thread, and it only adds to my confusion... I'll surely look again. The notion that it can be a useful edc knife I am not completely sold on--no matter how much I try to convince myself. I don't mind larger knives--a GEC #23 has been in my pocket since I got it a couple weeks ago. This is different however. The single blade #45 seems more practical--I can't imagine that holding the knife with the massive Whaler's main blade closed is very comfortable... thus making the secondary blade a poor option. And yet I am still a little fascinated by them.

Any other thoughts, anyone?

Yes, using the pen blade on the Whaler has to be well thought out, but it can be useful. My Whaler with its 2 blades is thinner than my single bladed Roughneck, not by much, but it is thinner. They aren't exactly unobtrusive in the pocket, but not nearly as bad as I first imagined.

If I remember, when I get home from work Monday, I'll try and get a comparison pic with my GEC made Schrade in the 23 and 73 pattern, as well as some others so as to give a sense of scale.

They fascinated me as well, but I like them more than I figured I would.

Thanks for the follow-up; I checked out your pics in the elephant toenail thread again--so far I am leaning toward the single blade #45, but I'd appreciate the comparison pics should you have the time. Is their weight similar to a Buck 110 in the pocket? I was wondering if a belt sheath would be the way to go.

Here are a few comparison shots for you. I put these on a kitchen scale, along with a Buck 110.

110-7 3/8oz
#45-6 3/4oz
#46-6 7/8oz
#36-5 3/8oz
#23-6 oz
#73-3 7/8oz
Peanut 1 1/4oz

The top knife in these pics is a 73 pattern, the bottom a 23. Shown with a 36 Sunfish, 45 Roughneck, and a 46 Whaler.

With a Case Chestnut Bone Peanut.

Trying to show the thickness with a 23.

And all together.

Wow, thanks so much for the amazing pics and the info--really helped a lot.

I will; generally I've been lazy about posting pics, but you've inspired me. I'll take some of what I have in the coming days and post. Right now I am on the fence between another traditional or another modern. The modern in the running is a Benchmade 710; the #45, single blade is the tradition most on my radar... decisions, decisions... and thanks again.

The sunfish/toenail etc patterns are great for displaying an interesting handle material. I had a GEC made Bradford Cutlery toenail that I regret selling. I am not sold on the practicality of carrying it unless you regularly wear bib overalls or string heavy gauge cable as part of your job. But I am not sure this should be thought of as an EDC knife but a fanciful one. The impression of mine was that it was cartoonish in its proportions. I mean that in the least disparaging way possible.

My suggestion would be to buy a 12 dollar Rough rider to try the pattern. If you like it then you can buy another brand. You may be surprised by the Rough rider.

Best regards

Robin

great photos gruntmedik, its always good to see backsprings, strange how the long pull on the is cut off on the whaler

I thought it was strange to see the long pull cut off like that, but evidently it was common. There is a website dedicated to Elephant Toenail collecting, and several had the same configuration.
