I am on the fence here as to which I would like to get. Specs and price place them pretty close to one another material for material. Looking at 440c with the GEC as compared to the 14-4CrMo with Canal Street. Just wondering if I could get some thoughts from some of you that may have both. Blade grinds, f&f, materials, etc...

Apologize in advance if this has been brought up before, but could find such a thread in the search feature.

Don't have either--but I just learned yesterday 14-4CrMo is a respectable copy of a highly respectable steel (ATS-34) that I'd take over 440C. But that's just me.

You could hardly pick a tougher pair of knives to choose between, they are so similar in quality. The 14-4CrMo may be a point or two harder than the 440C, but both will hold a terrific edge. The Canal Street will almost certainly have softer springs than the GEC will, but with factory knives, anything is possible. Pick the one YOU like the best, or get both and decide for yourself. For the same money, I would get the GEC, but would never be unhappy with the Canal Street.

Going to have to find out, got the CSC on order. Made the decision to go with CSC first because they seem to be fairly hard to come by in the nicer scales. Will have to get the GEC down the road a bit. Appreciate the input guys.

You have made a good choice, but there was not a bad choice to be made. When you get it, you must show us some pictures. I have one half moon trapper and I adore the knife. I have one GEC 48 and I love it as well.

Both are great knives. The CSC's blade is slightly longer than the GEC. The pulls on the GECs are usually stronger than the CSCs at least for the 1095 models but the 440c models aren't as strong as the 1095 ones either. The 440c ones would still be a little stronger than the CSC IME. Also, the CSC does not have a half stop. There are more options for cover materials with CSC as well. The CSC will come with a small pouch that you can carry your knife in. I like using this pouch with other knives too because it's a little grabby in the pocket so the knife is more likely to stay upright instead of sliding horizontally.

Steve, Trand and Jeff hit all the points...nothing left for to say...............except good choice you couldn't go wrong either way...

I'm thinking about a CS Half-Moon as well - love to hear some follow up once you've put it to use.

For your consideration...

Trand, the ivory micarta half moon is just . . . words fail me!  :D

Thanks guys. So... which one did you get? Or are you going to make us wait? :)

Thoughts... Originally I passed over the #48s as I was new to traditional knives and especially carbon steel in a pocket knife. I bought most of my CSC's then. I've gotten a lot more comfortable with 1095 and now 440c is an option. I bought most of my GECs after the CSCs. I intended to use these for food prep when away from home and both worked very well for that. Looking back, I can't say I prefer one over the other. I wish I could help more... you'll just have to get both.

I have one of each coming, both in the Elk. Will do a full photo comparison when they arrive.

Mink, I recently bought my third 48. My first was a Beaver Tail trapper, 2nd was an Unxld slim trapper and the third is another Unxld slim trapper. Burnt stag on the first single, and antique bone on the second single.

I really need to give Canal Street a try. I'm way into my knife budget this year, and today's only March 1st! :o

Incidentally, I've got a #48 in cherry wood and a Half Moon in ebony on the way... I'll have to chime in with a couple pictures when they show up...

That CSC in ebony is hard to find also.
