I just recieved a #55 autumn gold jigged bone spear blade in the mail today and I love it! It doesn't seem to be a very popular pattern, and I had heard bad things about the back springs, but mine is awesome. It has a nice pull (around 7-8) and snaps open with authority. No blade play at all and nicely centered blade.

Now the problem.... i was giving it the once over and noticed the shield is pretty loose. i can feel it move and hear it click when I run my thumb over it. The question is.... do I send it back for repair? I'm affraid that if they take it apart, it will develop blade play or something. This #55 is perfect except for the shield. I can see the shield pin and it looks like someone just kind of forgot to peen it and finish it off(it sticks down more than usual). I don't think the shield will fall off. Should I try to fix it myself maybe with a touch of glue just so it doesnt move? any suggestions? Should I contact the vendor I purchased it from or send it to GEC?

Certainly should not be like that.

I recommend contacting the seller to see if there's a replacement, but a drop of superglue on a matchstick ought to fix it permanently. Then you'll have a unique knife both pinned AND glued !

Fine looking example I must say.

I would send it back, I think it would be highly unlikely that you could send a knife back for repair to the shield to GEC and everything else came back wrong. In my small GEC accumulation of 8 knives I haven't had any with blade play, its unlikely to be a problem. I wouldn't be comfortable with the thought of the shield being loose, and one day destined to fall off.

Great looking knife you got

I have the wharncliffe version and my shield is also loose! If it gets any more wobble then I will glue it in which I think is done at the factory. I base that on the fact that some of my other GEC knives I can see the glue in the small voids around the shields. It sounds like someone missed a step on these 55's.

It can't move out of place as the pin holds it. They will not take a knife apart for this type of issue, they would rather just replace it with another on hand and move this thru the store. You could probably save yourself and the factory $6 and shoot a little superglue to it; as that will probably be their solution. Although the shields are pinned on, they get a little shot of glue to take out this type of movement and yours just didn't set up.

Update... I think my perfectionist side was getting a little worked up and worrying about small beans... I put some superglue in there and let it cure for a bit and now you could never tell. All around, I am very happy with the #55 pattern and will probably be picking up another soon! My #15 has a little pocket competition....

Thanks for the thoughtful responses to my fussy thread!

Nice knife!! I would personally just drop a bit of super glue on the side of the sheild and wipe off the excess with some alcohol. But that's just my $0.02

That was much easier than sending it back. It's a great looking knife.

Congratulations on the repair! That is a really good looking knife that you chose. I don't know why they are not more popular, I want one. Looks like it would ride easy in the pocket yet still be a nice sized user.

I like the 55, thought the spear blade looked very interesting even though you see the whancliffs around more often, thanks for the pictures and thread, very cool
