Hi, guys. I'm new to this forum but not new to knives and am looking to get a traditional pocket knife for EDC. Over the last 10-15 years I've carried Spydercos, Kershaws, CRKT's, and Benchmades and I'm just getting tired/bored of the single blade with pocket clip type knives. The #57 whittler appeals to me because it looks handy for whittling wood spirits, etc on walking sticks while killing time setting around a camp fire while camping.

After looking at the #57 picture thread and some online knife shops, I have a few questions:
1. I get confused with the "serialized" versus "non-serialized" versions. Is there any difference and should I be concerned if I'm buying this knife to use and not collect?

2. I know that the #57 Gepetto came out first with a main Warncliffe blade and now they have added a model with a main Clip Point blade. I think I prefer the warncliffe blade for my intended uses. Will they continue to produce the #57 with a warncliffe blade or is supply limited to whats available right now?

3. Where is the best place online to purchase a GEC #57? And by "best", I don't mean cheapest; I mean best selection, knowledgeable staff and good customer service.

thanks for your help.

Thanks in advance.

Randy.....

As far as the serialized/non-serialized there isn't a difference just your preference...GEC produces knives for collectors and users hence the serial and non-serial versions.......will GEC produce more of the #57 Whittler Geppetto with the wharncliffe - possibly in different handle materials at some later time..but don't ask when it would happen..because only they know if it would so if there's one you like now ...might as well grab it while the getting is good.
GEC does a great job of listing their distributors on the web site and anyone of them is quite capable to help out...

Selection of both knives, wharncliffe main blade and clip main blade will be limited to stock on hand at any distributor. GEC also has a minimum advertised price policy in place .

thanks for the info guys. I've got a #57 Gepetto with green jigged bone and warncliffe main blade on the way. I'll post some pics when it gets here.

Randy,

I think you will like it a lot! The blades are all thin and profiled VERY well for carving. It didn't take much to get the shoulders off mine blended and have it stropped for seriously smooth and clean whittling :)

I have a few of the warncliffe and clip versions. The main difference that I notice is the warncliffe version has much lighter pull on all three blades. The clips have a stronger pull on all three blades. If your green one is like mine, I think you will become attached to it. Its very classy looking in person and stands out in a unique way.

I look forward to your review and photos. PS, I have never noticed a difference in build quality between serialized and non serialized knives. I have mostly serialized though because I usually can't find the handle material that I want without it.

Oh yeah, one more question: Are GEC's like my Beckers? In that they send subliminal messages telling my brain to buy their relatives " You need a #54, and a #57 in Stag, etc etc" so that a year from now my wife will be saying "why do you have 5 knives that are just alike? how much did you spend on those?" :)

My #57 whittler came in the mail yesterday; Thanks to the FAST shipping. the pics aren't the greatest, but it's the best I could get on my smartphone.

First impressions: the green jigged bone is very dark, almost black except around the edges Fit and finish are excellent. It's the perfect size for EDC and should be good for carving too. The two smaller blades are very sharp; the main blade isn't quite as sharp as the other two but i can fix that. The springs appear to bee just right: not too hard to open and still close positively.

Overall, I am very happy with it.

Glad you got a good one buddy, that is a nice knife. How does it fit your hand? Looks like it has enough meat to grab hold of.

Funny thing you being from Concord NC. I lived there for a bit over 6 years before moving a couple years ago. Still have some wonderful friends down there I speak to occasionally. Nice little town.

It fit's well in my medium-sized hands. It's actually smaller in person than it looks in pictures which is a good thing since I thought it might be a little too big. Turns out it's perfect.

Yep, Concord is pretty nice. If you lived hear for 6 years, then you know what starts this weekend and lasts till Memorial day. RACE WEEK. I'll be in town this weekend for the AllStar race but leave before the big crowd gets here next weekend.

Lol, yep I know all about it. Was on the inside looking out at that madness for a long time. Seemed like the tent city and the 90+ degree heat seemed to arrive about the same time each year.

Miss Morrow Mountain something fierce. Some lovely country you live in buddy.
