GEC #57 halfwhitt and full whittler, I can't decide

Think the title sums it up pretty well. I have always been drawn to the geppetto whittler. Now the half whit has drawn me back to the pattern. Anyone have both? I would love to know if the main blade lengths are the same? Any other things worth noting? Also curious if either main blade can just be pinch opened?

I really cant decide. For me personally I am not a big fan of the pen blade but can live with it. The geppetto with wharnie main blade does not have a pen which is a bonus. Really curious how big of a difference in thickness they are, guess some pictures would be worth a thousand words ;)

Funny I was also looking at these paterns for my next knife and I could'nt decide between them. I would also like to hear what others think and see some side by side comparisons.

I've got the HW in Pickle Green Bone but don't own the 3 blade Whittler.

My observations: really nice single-spring knife, so it's slim. Joints are nearly sunk so it has yet more pocket friendly aspects. The Wharncliffe is a decent size too. Personally, I don't like the Northfield versions as they have longpull which I think looks ugly on a Wharncliffe (great on Spear or Clip though) It has a pen secondary which is a good combo for Wharncliffe master. If I were getting one I would probably opt for the Tidioutee Coffee House acrylic, it is beautiful and on reflection, is better than the jigged bone version.

That is the one I like also, now that the brown buffalo horn test patterns are all gone.

Leaning for the coffee house or the snakewood. Never owned either but they both look great. I usually am not a fan of long pulls on wharnies but the snakewood just looks sooo good.

Can you pinch the blade open?

Picked up a HW snakewood several weeks ago. Just loving it. Perfect pocket carry. Was uncertain about the Wharnie, but I am really liking it. It has essentially displaced my 85 cocobolo for the bulk of my carry time.

This is the first knofe I have liked the look of snakewood with. Great lookin knife Pjake.

Still wanting to know if its pinchable.

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff, pinchable in my exp. But, it has a lot of 'hump' on view so with the crescent nail nick at least, opening presents no problems at all.

I suspect the HW would be easier in the hand too, being a 2 blade single-spring set up.

Coffee House Acrylic yes!

Thanks, Will

Thank you Will for the reply, much appreciated Sir!

I have found a coffee house that I like, a snake wood, bocote wood and a hemlock bone lol. I dont understand why I am drawn to this pattern so much(blade selection is not my favorite), the thinness and design are so sleek with such great lines. Looks like a perfect leisure carry knife for me.

Well Jeff, it's an UNUSUAL knife and I think that gives it a lot of appeal. Fit & finish is top of the range too, so no worries on that front.

Now proceed to checkout :D

Ill agree with Doug from another thread......Enabler!!! :D

Lol I am close to pulling the trigger. Part of me keeps looking at the new 55 single blade and wondering if I shouldnt wait to choose. I mean it is only going to be my after work, weekend knife and due to simplisity my fishing knife  :D

Hi Rockgolfer,

I am fairly new to the Forum. I thought I would post some comparsion photos of the #57 full and half Whitt's. I am quite fond of this pattern. I also have, in one of the photos a Case/Bose Norfolk (Thanks Railsplitter!!!) and a large Case Classic Wharncliffe Whittler from the mid '90's to give some sort of size reference. I would be hard pressed to pick between the full and half whitt. I think you may need both!

Great pics there, Kerry! What is the handle material on that Case Classic? It's absolutely gorgeous!

Thanks Rick. The Case is in Gold Lip Mother of Pearl. I also have one in Black MOP.

Very nice indeed Kerry. Thank you, they are much appreciated. I think I will wait for the houndstooth to be released before I make my mind up. I wish I could pick up all of them but thats just not a reality for me right now.

The 55 Houndstooth looks like it has real potential. Any idea how long it takes between the time GEC teases us with the development photos and when they release the goods? I only just "discovered" GEC in early December of last year. What great knives.

Its all a guess but on average I would say within one to two months of put together pics it rolls out. Of course a lot can change that but its what I would guess from watching their site.

Thanks for the info Jeff. That gives me some time to recover from the #57's. By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed your post "A rambling comparison of GEC's #53 - #79". It sounds like you really put your knives to work! It inspired me to order a #79. It is my first GEC with a spearpoint blade.
