My first GEC arrived yesterday. It's a #66 Calf Roper. Upon inspection, I noticed that the sheepsfoot blade has a little side to side bladeplay. Is this common to this model? Is it a big deal? Will it get worse? I plan on using it for EDC and whittling. I'm pretty new to slipjoints and would be grateful for any guidance. Thanks.

Blade play is a very subjective thing, I've had the odd GEC knife arrive with blade play. I live in the UK so I've not felt the blade play sufficient to send it back;)

Having said that I get the impression that the warranty offered by GEC gives you the option to send the knife back if you're not happy. GEC will then make a call and potentially tighten the knife up. If I was in the States I'm pretty confident that if I sent the knife in if there was a problem GEC would straighten it out...

Why don't you address these questions to the Distributor you purchased the knife from?

I have a pretty good sized drawer full of GEC's now. Only one came with blade play. I'm the type that calls the slightest wiggle blade play btw. I would say its not typical for GEC period.

The one I had the issue with was a 57 whittler. The dealer sent it back for me before mailing it to me. I got it and it still had slight play once I flushed the grit out of the joints so I sent it back again. The people at GEC are so nice and helpful. When talking to them being polite and respectful will go a long way.

I think you have to decide for yourself whether to send it back or not. Obviously no blade play would be better than a little blade play but only you can decide if it's something you're willing to live with.

I don't whittle but if I did I would want the knife I'm using to have no blade play. Seems like whittling would be more likely to make the play worse than most common EDC tasks.

I have a few GEC's. My calf roper also has a minor amount of blade play in the clip blade. It will be going to GEC to be fixed along with the pocket sunfish with the pull from hell. All in all, GEC is a solid knife, but sh-t happens and as long as they resolve the problem without alot of drama then I will be happy.
