I had previously read some of the old forum posts reporting blade play problems with GEC lockbacks, but decided to risk an online purchase anyway. So, I went ahead a bought a beautiful Cody Scout wharnie earlier this year from a GEC dealer (but non-BF dealer member).

Disappointingly but not surprisingly, it came with a modest amount of up-and-down and side-to-side blade play. The magnitude of the blade play wasn’t all that great—maybe 1/32” or so in each direction—but the disconcerting thing was that you could feel and hear the blade rattle while shaking the knife by the butt end with the blade open.

Initially, I wasn’t too concerned since this knife would not be seeing any hard use. But I found myself not carrying this knife as often as I had planned due to the blade play issue. So, early last month, I finally decided to send the knife back to GEC for warranty repair. I followed return instructions provided by Chris Tucker, including sending the knife back in its original tube.

The knife arrived at GEC just before their Rendezvous weekend, so they couldn’t get started on it until after the event. Just about two weeks after the Rendezvous, I received the knife back. (Note the repair date marked by GEC on the inside of the lower tube cap.) The blade play issue had been resolved, except for an almost imperceptible amount of remaining play in the up-and-down direction if the blade is muscled.

In summary, I’m glad I decided to send the knife back to GEC. I had initially been concerned that either the knife was unrepairable, or that some collateral damage would be done to the knife during the repair process. But the knife came back repaired and in pristine condition, and all is good again.

My #72 is like that, but I still carry it. I am going to take it up to them myself on my next visit. I'm glad they fixed it for you.

I had the same thing done to a #72 wharnie last year. Came back in fine shape with zero play and great walk & talk.

I'm glad you got a good result. That's too nice a knife not to take out.
