I just received this '07 Scout from Mike Latham's "odd lots" and I thought I'd post a few pics. I dunno whether it's the luck o' the draw, or if GEC has changed their methods in the last few years, but this one came with very serviceable cutting edges, and while the springs certainly aren't wimpy--they both have confidence-inspiring firmness--the blades are easy to open; no nail-breakers here. The natural red stag is nicely-matched too.

Many congrats. Looks sensational! My burnt stag #73 two-blade is one of my very favorites.

Wow, that red stag is fantastic!
Great, now I have to get a GEC in that....:grumpy::D

GEC certainly has nice stag, many times the knives I've seen have stuff that is as good as the scales on custom knives. They also have great fit and finish. That flush joint is just an incredible feature on a production knife. I wish they would come out with more and different patterns though. I like the #73, but most of the time it seems that they just use the same frame over and over again in their offerings, resulting in a buch of thick and wide knives.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. :)

I agree with all of your observations. GEC's workmanship is outstanding for the price--with a glaze finish, this knife could almost pass for something straight out of a 1920s factory--but their patterns tend to be a bit clunky. This #73 is really too bulky and heavy for my needs, but I just couldn't pass up that stag. I'd love to see them take on more finesse patterns like the slim whittler. The congress is nice, but four blades--two of them redundant--are more than I can handle. Hell, I'll spend ten minutes just trying to choose the right blade :o.

They're definitely a company to watch.

That knife in a single blade is just right, kamagong! I prefer one a little thinner also!
But the stag is outstanding! And it was an "odd lot"!!?? Amazing!!

That's a sweet one.
Congrats!

Very very nice. The handles are great. The springs on the GECs seem to be getting closer to the norm. My latest wasn't a nail ripper.

That is BEAUTIFUL

I also looked hard at your baby for my son, but he wanted

one of the new lockbacks from GEC. Lucky for me, and my son, Mike had

one of the first 50 left of the pretty red lockbacks :D :D :D

I should have grabbed an in hand picture of it. But my son carries it at work

every day.

"Red Stag" ?? antler from a European Red Deer (Wapiti) or dyed, jigged bone ?
