I'm really jonesing for one of the Great Eastern #73 trappers. I'm looking at the primitive bone model with EC, and the natural canvas micarta one - both are 1095, and I want it for a user. Does anyone here have either or any other 73 and how do you like it?

I have several Great Eastern #23 & #73 Trappers. I don't carry them, but when I get a "purse" for them I might. The fit on them is really good and I suspect they would sharpen up really good. They are now selling them without a serial # for a little less money. You might try Cumberland for those.

Zip, get a canvas one and if you don't like it I will refund purchase price + shipping when you send it back!! Or if you want to put together a passaround I will ship it out for that as well.

Mike, that's a really generous offer you made to Slade, but for future reference, please do not post any advertising or commercially related posts in this forum as you are a dealer and don't have a dealer membership on the site. (And even the dealer members must keep such posts to the appropriate sections of the site.)

I don't say this as a slap at you as you know I have respect for you and your business but rules are rules (though I do not make 'em.)

(Feel free to contact Zip7 via email or PM if you wish to go further with this.)

Thanks for understanding.

I use a No.73 Liner lock Barehead single blade in Burnt Stag as much as I can and can report the following: It sharpens quickly and effectively, the back spring is moderate(unlike some GE's, but this may be due to the liner, don't know) as a single blade it's not too massive for pocket carry, fit and finish is really good.It does not patina as quickly as say CASE cv but it's coming along not spotting or uneven. The liner lock works smoothly and is reassuring, all round this IS a knife for use not for a twilight existence in a drawer:thumbup:

I bought a Great Eastern Cutlery Model 73 Trapper...Tidioute in primitive bone and a Great Eastern Cutlery Model 73 Beaver Tail...Tidioute...in pond bone. They’re pretty knives with great F&F and carbon steel blades. However, I just couldn’t open them with their impossibly stout backsprings. Since I play guitar, I can’t live with broken fingernails so I sent them back to GE for adjustments. GE was prompt and courteous. I guess there was only so much that they could do with the Trapper so it’s relegated to a “twilight existence in a drawer”. The Beaver Tail is my EDC and, as I might have mentioned in a previous post, it reminds me of a “Fancy Sod Buster”. Maybe they’ve dealt with the backspring issue or maybe you can live with it. They’re neat knives and you have to like what GEC is trying to do.

I got my Tidioute #73 Beaver Tail Scout in smooth white bone today. Overall it's a very nice knife with a nice hefty feel. Massive, solid half stop. Good crisp action, but not a nailbreaker. Came sharp enough to open other packages.

My only issues with it is that the scales are a little uneven, thicker on one side than the other, and there's a slight gap between the scale and bolster on one side. Enough to catch your nail, but not enough to insert a piece of paper. But the material has such a nice speckled color and smooth feel that it overcomes these small deficiencies, for me. I really like this knife.

Sam, nice to hear somebody is USING their GE's as well, far too many condemned as lifers in the safe in my view...sorry to hear there are some deficiencies though but I think the bone will age very well especially after an oil dip. What serial number does yours have? Mine is 076.

I don't own any knives (or guns) that I won't use. On the other hand, I don't have any super expensive items in either category, at least from my perspective. I'm not sure I could bring myself to use one that I had paid hundreds (or thousands) for.
