Do any of you guys edc a GEC #79 workhorse? I like the 2 bladed variants as the large blade appears to be a good general use blade and given how tall it is, it seems to have a long life span. The smaller sheepsfoot/wharncliff blade looks good for packages for fine cutting. I'm considering getting a #79 in the future, but just wanted an opinion from people who own and use them. Pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Another side question. Are all of GEC stag pieces always so polished? I like smooth matte, sorta translucent(to an extent) look on stag. I noticed on a lot of GEC stag pieces the scales look extremely polished depending on the lighting.

Thanks,
BN

Can't really offer anything on Stag as I've not had any Stag handled knives and am not a fan of it personally. The 79 is a great pattern that I really like. That said however, they do tend to run a very stout pull of around 8-9 on a scale of 10 oftentimes, so ask the seller to give you an honest estimate on the pull as depending on the strength of your hands or if you tend to have brittle fingernails, you may not like the pull on it.

I no longer have this knife, I traded it to someone because I wanted a different model and just wasn't carrying this one as much as I thought I would when I bought it. I miss it though!

This is a decent sized and very thin folder for it's size. This would be one of the more substantial mid-sized GEC patterns that is easily carried in the front or back pocket. The knife pictured above is now in my stable ... I rate the Spear as a "7" and the Coping as about a "8.5" and most of that is the physics of the way this blade pivots on the single spring because of the short lever action inherent in the length of the blade. As Jeff stated above ... "pull" is a legitimate question - especially in the case of a single spring, two bladed folder.

Just speculation and some pictures would be helpful, but it seems that stag is always thicker than bone in the same handle application. I've often thought that stag cut bone might be a good compromise between esthetics and physical strength (thickness versus durability). All of my stag handles are polished and someone with more knowledge may be able to speak to this with more precision.

BN - get a #79 Workhorse and give it a try ... it could turn out to be your Grail.

BTW Jeff ... I'll tell her that you miss her. But, she ain't ever going back! :D

Darn it! Lol, When I see those pics I suddenly miss it! That's a beauty.

Glad you're enjoying it and it's in good hands though! :)

PS: Do I get Visitation Rights? Hehe

I have the same knife as pictured above. The pulls are stout but not unmanageable. The previous owner put a crazy sharp edge on the main and it slices. The coping secondary is great for packages and cutting carpet.
I really like how thin the knife is and how well it carries. You get a lot of knife in a relatively small package.
I also have the three bladed whittler version in ebony. It's quite the tank and considerably thicker due to the two layer design. Sorry I also can't offer any feedback on the stage version.

With only one spring, the two blade 79 packs a lot in a relatively slim package.

That Blackwood version really interests me! Can't get one sent to Europe, so far....Looks a great knife in that pic.

Thanks, Will

Here's a pic I took a while ago of my Che Chen 79 with an EZopen 85 and a 92 Eureka Jack. Although I have only carried the 79 once or twice I do really like the design and blade choices. I recommend one if you feel its something you would like ~

Joey thanks for the picture. I have been thinking about getting a 79 ,but wandered about size.I have 85 and 92 so now I know how they compare. 79 just moved to the short list. Thanks again

Thanks, that's why I bought it. It was definitely a impulse purchase when I saw the pics on ksf. Heres a closer pic of the mark side. The pile side isn't nearly as nice.
