I was the lucky winner of knifeswapper's giveaway in mid March. I had the choice between a GEC congress or $70 in store credit. I had been lusting after a 15 or 85 for a few weeks so I decided on the store credit. I'm very happy with my decision. I chose to use the store credit towards a GEC SFO 85 liner lock with buffalo horn covers.
I received the 85 a few days ago. I absolutely love the 85! It fits perfectly in my hand. I admittedly don't have a lot of experience with slip joints but I would guess the pull around a 8. The cloud shield is fit nicely in the covers with only a smidge of gap between the cover and shield. The buffalo horn covers have a little gray color which I like. I really like the easy open and long pull. I didn't know if I would like the spear point blade but after using it for a few days I'm quite fond of it. The blade has a fine tip for detail work and nice belly for slicing. The blade is perfectly centered.
The only thing about this knife that I don't like is the liner lock. In my opinion this style of knife doesn't need a lock. With that said the lock up is perfect and very secure. The half stop very pronounced which is a big benefit when your thumb is disengaging the lock. I can live with the lock because I like everything else about this knife.
This is my second Great Eastern knife. My critique comes with limited experience. My other GEC knife is a 48 Improved Trapper which blew my mind when I received it. I think they are a great value for fit and finish and materials used. I couldn't be happier with either knife.
A huge thank you to knifeswapper (aka Collector Knives) for his very generous giveaway.
